Best way to prepare for 175 training
What is the best way to prepare for E-175 initial system training ?
I heard lots of people get washed during initial training because of the FMS and the sim . Since your are not flying pilot anymore and you need to get to manage and monitor the acft . Any good sim recommendations with E-175 out there to practice ? I appreciate it in advance Thank you and happy flying to you all fellow pilots :) |

You get out what you put in. Study! Put in the time that is required for you, and only you will know how much that is. Stay after class and go over it again on your own or with a buddy. It isn't hard, just takes time and dedication.

121 training isn't easy. You'll hear that it is like drinking from a fire hose. The airline has to balance the quality of training with cost, and they do that by expecting new hires to do their part. Some fail exams or orals just because their knowledge wasn't up to par. Take notes, and study them, especially with your classmates, and ask questions. Do this so that you can make the flying portion of your checkride much easier...
When you get in the sim, make every minute count. Failures because of hand flying skills do happen. The PFD uses the "sky pointer" style of attitude indicator, and this can mess up your hand flying skills if you're not ready for it. A couple others in my class had trouble because they weren't used to using an EFIS. The Honeywell system in the E170 has the tools you need; but you have to learn how to use them outside of the sim. Self-debrief each lesson, compile questions, and ask your sim instructors! You usually get just as much preflight and postflight briefing time as there is sim time. |

That being said, study like you would for any other plane...know the limitations 100%, and the systems. Most places dont expect you to build the airplane anymore, but know what makes the system work, its limitations, etc... If you get trained at flight safety, those guys are amazing. there is a lot of interactive training modules. As far as flying goes, a plane is a plane. there is a lot of automation but remember you can always turn off the autopilot and hand fly. even with the autopilot on there is a lot to monitor but after your sim lessons you should be set. Take off...power up, autothrottles kick in, pilot monitoring keeps an eye on them. pos rate, gear up. Auto pilot on and off you go. if you dont like what the autothrottles are doing, turn them off and fly like anything else. dont forget it is just a plane with a throttle, stick and rudder. everything else is there to make your life easier once you learn how to use it. |

Once you start learning about the automation, make sure you really understand the difference between SPDt (Speed on Thrust) and SPDe (Speed on Elevator). Understanding the difference will vastly improve your energy management. Also, always know why the FMS is commanding a specific speed when in the ‘FMS Speed’ mode. Finally, when planning on a VNAV descent, always be thinking (and verifying) that the plane is going to start (and stop) descending when you want it to.
I’m not trying to confuse you with specifics, and don’t worry about these things now as it sounds like you have not started class yet, but keep these things in the back of your mind when you get into the procedures trainer. |
If you have the limitations, that would be helpful to memorize before class. They’ll explain systems and walk you through the profiles in class. But, limitations are straight memorization.

During systems week use the VSIM after hours and practice the preflight until you can do it fast. Device time is valuable; when you get to FPTs and Sims, the less time it takes you to preflight, the more time you'll have to work on other stuff. Also, find a study partner. Most people study with their sim partner, but the bottom line is everybody should have somebody to practice flows, callouts and memory items with. Of the people I've seen struggle with training, almost all of them didn't practice after hours with a partner for some reason or another. Be psyched up to work hard. There will be plenty of time to kick back when you're line qualified. This is a great group - it will be worth it. |
If you can’t get out of the E175 sim, do the traveling public a favor and find a new career, that is such an easy plane to fly!
