The best overnights
I didn’t see a thread about this, and I think a lot of future airline pilots would find this interesting.
If you’re currently in a regional post- 1. Your airline 2. The best trips/overnight locations you’ve flown to for work |

1. SkyWest
2. Popular ones are SBP, SBA, MRY, if you can get a long SFO or LAX those are good. I had a relatively long EWR and the FO and I explored Manhattan. ASE, EGE (bring your fishing gear), and plenty more. |
^add YYJ/JAC/BJX to that..
|
9E guy says:
- DSM is awesome when they put you downtown. - LEX has some surprisingly cool restaurants/hangouts in some of the strip malls. - BTV for Church Street and the lake. - MHT for the Manchvegas experience. There's even a low rent poker room near the mall. - Second the Expressway Visual at LGA. Points for the VOR 13L/R at JFK and the Harbor Visual at PWM as well. |
Silver
GNV for college atmosphere PBI for dog track |
OO, downtown BNA is pretty fun. SAT, PHX, AUS, SAN, are good ones too.
|
It seems like at every airline someone somewhere likes even the worst overnight that everyone else hates. It just depends who you ask.
My favorites in no particular order: VPS LEX BTV ...and as I type this and look at the list of airports I fly to I realize that I could honestly care less if I ever saw one of them again. |
19hrs in FAT is the worse of the worst
|
Any of them that actually let me get 8 hours of sleep in a comfortable bed not infested with parasites.
|
In no particular order;
ROC ITH YUL CHS LEX But in my opinion, for a good overnight, what's more important than where you are is the crew you are with. A stay at a good overnight with slam-clickers is less fun than a walk to the strip mall across the highway in Backwoods, USA with a fun crew. Oh, and as the poster above said, a good bed, no roaches or bedbugs, AC that works, etc. |

All downtown hotels, with lots of great stuff in walking distance. Pretty much any Midwest college town can be a blast. Least favorites are PHL, TYS (hotel is like half an hour away from the airport and we pass multiple good hotels to get there), LIT (actually kinda like the town but our hotel is terrible and buggy), anywhere northwest of Chicago in the winter because I wasn’t built for 40 knot wind at 0 degrees, and MKE because if you get in after 9pm enjoy eating your gas station dinner since it’s the only place open to eat and getting stabbed over $2 on your walk back to the hotel. |
SDF, 4th Street Live and all the other cool bars and resturants around. Slugger factory right up the street. I think a vast majority of airlines stay at the same hotel downtown along the river.
GNV, BTV to add make up my top three. 9E is plagued though of putting us at decent hotels but in the middle of an office park or only a gas station and a subway around. If you’re will to Uber you can find something in any city at least. |
MYNN, MBPV and EYW are popular at Republic.
|
Some of my faves (OO):
YYJ (we stay up in Sidney near the airport) Guanajuato, MX -- gorgeous town Bozeman and Missoula MT (in the summer, of course) -- great college towns Wichita -- downtown was a pleasant surprise And then of course the obvious ones: SBA, SBP, MRY, EUG, SUN (in the summer), SMF (we stay right downtown). On the flip side, I'll be just fine if I never see the following places ever again: Williston, Winnipeg, Fresno, Charleston WV, Edmonton, Idaho Falls, and let's not forget Devil's Lake :-0 |
Former SkyWest, favs were all the mountain towns (MSO, FCA, DRO, GUC, JAC) of course coastal towns (MRY, SBA, SBP, SAN) and Canada/Mexico (YYJ, YVR, YYC, YQB, BJX, MEX).
That said, with a good crew you can have fun anywhere. Some of my favorite times actually came from the likes of Devils Lake, ND and Eau Claire, WI of all places - granted those times were outliers but still. |
I actually like Winnipeg. As long as it’s not in the middle of the winter and the crew wants to go to the Shark club. Saskatoon actually isn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. I went with a crew to a rooftop pub in the middle of summer and we enjoyed ourselves.

Agree with everyone who said BTV. Church St has a ton of great restaurants and bars, and then of course there's always the lake. OMA is surprisingly fun if you're downtown. And of course DCA, since most of the hotels have shuttles to the Metro and from there you can get anywhere for very cheap.
|
My favorite SkyWest overnights were, SBA, SBP, MFR, YYZ, YQB, FCA, and MRY.

If you're not downtown grab an Uber and hit the place up, makes 19 hours much more palatable...

Republic
(Not already mentioned) OMA YOW PWM BNA DCA ABQ BOI Just my opinion and some take some exploring or ubering. |
PSA
YYZ MYR DCA VPS Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Hotel and location make all the difference. I've had what we're once my favorite layovers turn into crappy layovers because of a hotel change.
Even great cities like BOS and DCA are bad layovers if you are too far from town to do anything on a 14 hour layover. Just long enough to almost be able to go out, but not quite. |
Best overnights are who you’re with not where you’re at. Vegas can suck with crap crew. for me OMA always was good time. Billy frogs!
|
Mesa - SBA, SBP, MRY, FLG, and YVR are my favorites
|
I bid for MLB and go home and sleep in my own bed.
|
Additionally OKC
|
SkyWest overnights add: SGU, EUG, NYL, FLG, ERI, ORD (long).
|
As a commuter, the best overnight is where I live and sleeping in my own bed. And getting them frequently.
|
If you have enough time, are willing to uber, and have a good crew, literally any over night is a good over night.
