ERJ Rwy Excursion at IAH

Looks like a 135/145 went off roading at IAH. Runway 26L closed, NOTAMED disabled aircraft on runway. Hope there were no injuries.

It was yesterday during the bad weather I believe. A lot of aircraft went around and some diverted so it was obviously a very difficult landing environment.

You’re correct...
Incident: Expressjet E145 at Houston on Dec 7th 2018, runway excursion on landing

So is this something to get fired for?

DirkDiggler 12-09-2018 08:24 AM

Nobody gets fired in this day and age unless they were doing something egregious. XJT does have pretty low go-around numbers and they try to address that every year in recurrent. 45 knot crosswind, it’ll be us and southwest landing and that’s it.

Depends on the CVR. If it's painful listen, gross unprofessionalism and sustained violation of sterile will not help your case.

Honest mistake, probably keep your job. Will slow your progression to the majors, especially if you end up on the news.

You can not be fired for anything on the CVR unless you say something really really negligent that would compromise safety. They can not take any action on you with the CVR.

On the other hand good luck at recurrent because you most likely will be remembered.

Nice theory.

Reality...

There will be honest mistakes on the CVR, and perhaps some that are borderline "not honest". They get to decide whether to fire you for those.

Suppose they listen to 1:45 of two dudes trash-talking the company and management, followed by :15 of weak checklist, weak SOP, and blatant sterile violation. By the time they get to the main event and the "honest-ish" mistakes, what frame of mind do you think they'll be in?

And as you mentioned at some airlines an event like this will set the tone for your next sim. And determine who the examiner will be.

That is why every time right before passing through 10,000 I always state how great it is to work for my airline and long live our Benevolent Leader!

Skywest has fired people before for what they heard on the CVR. It sounds like you are referencing that event.
