Slave wages and 'buy the job' type schools must also be factored in...just at the other end of the spectrum...

So it looks like the middle is nice and happy, arent ya?

Hence, the shortage of pilots. Qualified or not, many regionals are severly understaffed due to attrition and growth. I question how CHQ plans to staff the airplanes they have coming to them(EMB 175s I believe), they have to offer bonues to qualified ERJ/CRJ FOs just to staff their 50 seaters. How are they going to staff their new airplanes. Many regionals are having staffing shortages, but I think CHQ is particularly in for some severe staffing problems in the very near future.

The company won't have a problem staffing the 175's (those are on the republic certificate by the way). They're coming at a rate of like one a month, which means the company has time to hire and train crews on to the aircraft. Our shortage is definately on the CHQ side (all 50 seaters) because they are trying to "add" a lot more flying to that portion of it at a WAY faster rate. They're trying to get all those CRJ's up and running plus moving 145's from US Airways over to CAL...that creates a pseudo shortage because the 145's for Airways are usually flown by guys based in RIC, BUF, LGA, etc. where there is no COEX flying. Those 145's move over to flying in CMH, SDF, STL, etc. where there is COEX flying and the crews are already strained as it is. The company has shuffled around some Delta flying which I'm guessing is to alleviate that...from what I can see is that it's helping out.

The main point is that the 175's will be covered by the guys already on the Republic certificate and those getting hired on to the Republic certificate. The shortage right now is for 145 and CRJ drivers (hence the bonus). Now that the program is up and running, they're playing catch up.

I could go on forever about some other stuff, but I think that pretty much sums up the "shortage" part of flying over here.

There a shortage guys its only a matter a time. Industry wide, the more these companies start adding incentives the more red flags there stealing pilots from each other wonder why?

Here's a new hire profile 2000-2007:

fresh out of collage and flight training

heavily in debt to either the bank of american or the bank of "momanddad"

expects to be in the left seat of a jet within three years or less

gets the interview and is informed he will have to pay for training "no problem" "gulp"

makes it though flight training and IOE (i never said they were dummies)

is so happy to be flying a big shinny jet that they pinch themselves every three minutes

they are fresh fodder for airline management

they call crew schdulers "sir" or "mam" without knowing they have half the education and 1/1000th the training and their previous job was at the big "D" (not not delta dummy, mcdonalds)

they trust "their company" to keep them out of trouble with the feds

they know nothing about duty regs, flight time, reduced rest, etc, etc, etc, and don't care

for the smart ones it's takes about six months to figure out how they've been screwed, for the rest it takes two years. too late brother!

they then hope and pray they can get upgrade and get the "1000 hours pic" before they get canned or busted by the feds.

the lucky ones make it out the rest are just fodder in the regional grinding mill.

by the way who is skyhigh?

Everyone has to start somewhere.....whats wrong with opportunity? Dont belittle a CFI that is a" qualified candidate" to jump into the ranks. It sounds as if you dont want anyone to succeed. That's why there is this thing called training. Followed bye a few years in the right seat. Whats the problem, oh they are making hard for you to get a pay raise? Shame on them for seizing and opportunity!

Bye the way, just curious, whats the biggest bluefish you ever caught? Are you from New England?
