Decision time

I currently work at a good company, but there is no movement and upgrade could take up to 7 years. I like working here and i knew it was going to be this way before working here but i tried to convince myself lthat it would be fine. Now i finally came to my senses, well i did months ago but now i need to take action. I now feel like a committed career suicide. I know this is vague but that was intentional, you guys are smart..What would you do in this situation..

Roper92 04-23-2007 07:13 AM

What company? What kind of time do you have? If you are wanting a quicker upgrade, there are many more options out there. ExpressJet and Skywest have quicker upgrades without completely sacrificing your QOL. How is your QOL at your current airline?

bizzum 04-23-2007 07:16 AM

Do you work at AE? A lateral move from there would be risky, IMO. The regionals change almost daily, and todays 18 month upgrade is tomorrows 7+yr upgrade. From what I hear, AE is not a bad place to work, and the upgrade time is starting to come down. Stick it out, unless you are looking to improve your QOL, chasing upgrade is generally a bad idea. Just my 2 cents....

BoboAshanti 04-23-2007 07:17 AM

If you read it twice you could figure out what company it is. I have over 1200/370. QOL is ok for now, will be better next year but being a 7 year FO is starting to scare me.

Me: Alex, what is American Eagle?

Alex: correct

Me: Let's change it up and go with Alter Ego Airlines for $200, Alex.

Roper92 04-23-2007 07:44 AM

Ok Bobo, I understand. I am one of the few pro-eagle pilots on this forum. Here is my reasoning:

Everyone has this crazy idea they are going to go to an airline with a quick upgrade, upgrade, and move on to major with the bare minimum of 1000 pic turbine. Unless your uncle Joey is the chief pilot at that airline or your uncle Mikey has some influence on their HR department, you are going to spend a great deal of time at a regional. You need to decide if you would rather spend it at a good company or a bad one. Fortunately, there are good companies that also have quick upgrades. However, if I was in your opinion, there would only be one company I would leave Eagle for and I think you know who that is. How long have you been there?

BTW, what base/equip?

Past V1 04-23-2007 07:48 AM

Oh Oh Oh...I know I know...pick me...Is it Horizon!!!

Don't like QX? Leave. There was no secret to the high upgrade time here.

Career suicide is Mesa. QX is a regional that actually treats pilots like people (usually). If you are going to be one of those FO's that whine all the time about upgrade you better not fly with me when I am in the left seat soon.

HAHAHA Dude seriously you made my day. I like your arguement but, have you ever, ever ever, ever ever met a pilot horizon or non horizon that didnt' whine about something???? If you have met such a pilot he/she probably just got his student pilot license and hasn't done his first flight yet. When are you upgrading..? I'm sure when you come over the Q400 whining will be one of the only things you do? I could hear you now "conditions levers, piece of sh!t" "man the RJ went way faster than this piece of crap" "the RJ this the RJ that" hahahahah "7 legs today, man that sucks" "ahh we have to go through customs 4 times today" and the list goes on and on.. I guess the moral of the story is if you think you wont fly with someone that whines, then you need to go fly solo where it is vfr and smooth air with a good scenary.

you'd walk away from 7 years? have you forgotten how much reserve sucks? do you not enjoy your weekends or what?

ghilis101 04-23-2007 04:45 PM

oops ok sorry he hasnt been there that long... how long did you say you were there for?

KingAirPIC 04-24-2007 11:33 AM

Any news on what the plan is over there for hiring this spring/summer? Looks like they are getting rid of as many Q2s as they are picking up in Q4s so no extra seats to fill.
Any info would be appreciated as I would love to fly up there again.
Cheers!

Do you have to commute now? will you have to commute for another regional? In my opinion its noth worth commuting for any regional if you can avoid it in any way.

p1ayn 04-24-2007 04:02 PM

From someone who was at AE then another major and now Comair....lateral move is dangerous. If you enjoy where you're at, stay put. I believe someone mentioned on here that an 18 month upgrade today can turn into 5 years tomm. That is VERY VERY accurate. On the flipside, a 7 year wait may turn into an 18 month upgrade. Get the exp. not so much in flying but in ops and regulatory exp. so you will be ready for that upgrade, when it comes. When your time comes for the upgrade, flying the airplane is notthe issue but rather your enviromental exp, decision making and leadership skills. \
Good luck in whatever decision you make.

Oh I was just referencing upgrade time whining. Pilots are expected to whine about show times, van drivers, etc.
