Commuting on SkyWest, or others.
I was wondering if hired by SkyWest what the opportunities for commuting would be? I heard they closed the Emb base in Denver, where I live. What is the new junior base and what are the chances of commuting there? What are the chances of getting hired into the RJ, or at all for that matter, with 900TT and 120ME with some RJ simulator/ground school experience? Is commuting an option when starting out on any regional?

Commuting is tough, but even tougher when brand new. You will likely be on reserve for at least a few months and commuting to reserve is no fun at all. Also, commuting increases your chances of missing a check-in, something you for sure want to avoid during your first year.
I don't work for Skywest and don't know how the DEN base is regarding seniority. I will probably go back to a life of commuting as I simply can't afford to live in my current domicile and don't really like it anyway. Back to the question.... I think MKE is or will be the junior Skywest base. At least the living cost/crashpad cost/hotel cost there would be reasonable. |
the nice thing is MKE is an easy commute especially if mainline Midwest serves your airport. You can use the flight attendant jumpseats, allowing room for a total of 3 jumpseaters (1 cockpit, 2 FA) if the airplane is totally full (88 seats on a 717). And you can eat delicious warm baked chocolate chip cookies along the way.

How does the scheduling work? If you get assigned the Bro, could you move to the RJ any time soon? Are all the new hires still getting the Bro?

I have 4 times the amount of total and multi time you have and was place in the BRO. Fresno is about the most JR base in the system for the BRO right now but you could get based elsewhere with a little luck and prayer. About have of our class got FAT for a base with a few going to PSP, LAX, SFO, and one to Portland. Good luck and best wishes! The EMB gnd training manager told us today there is a May 6th class and more classes schedule throughout the summer. |
Hey what's the jumpseat policy on FedEx for the regional guys? More likely than not, I will be based somewhere's out east when I get on with an RJ. I would like to be able to hop on FedEx or even UPS from CAE to SoCal to see my wife as often as I can. I know UPS flies directly to ONT from CAE during daylight hours.

if youre in CASS youll have no problems jumpseating on Fedex, UPS, Atlas, etc. just as long as you know how to get to the cargo side and find each carriers building. they have websites to check flight times and you can also call their employee lines to list, but sometimes they dont pick up. youll travel in style most of the time on the widebodies, large seats etc, and sometimes theyll offer you some catering.
