People talking about what regionals were good/bad and who did what for the industry....

News flash, not too long ago every single regional was a “dumpster fire.” The best ones were horrible places to work.

In response, thousands of pilots exited the industry and sought employment elsewhere. Aspiring pilots decided to only fly recreationally, rather than focus on a career.

That created a pilot shortage because retirements hit, the economy improved, and the normal influx of pilots were no longer there to fill the void. This shortage is temporary until the economy collapses again and the whole thing repeats itself. For now though, the pilots who exited the industry and are not benefiting from the shortage probably helped us all out as much or more than any union could. It gave us leverage and erased the “they love flying so much they will do it for free” mentality that management would exploit

Hey y’all,

Just pickin brains here. Already have a CL65 type. Left a regional based in ORD because of the commute. Still flying Part 121 for a FedEx feeder. Currently sitting around 600 121 SIC. Want to upgrade quickly for family financial purposes (2 kids) I will not commute so willing to move except, well you know, New York. Currently live in Greenville, SC. I don’t really want to go through another type ride. Suggestions?

You're going to go through a type ride no matter where you go. Having a CL65 type rating does not exclude you from that.

I guess what I meant was I don’t want to get another type rating. I understand I have to take a ride not matter what. Are there any airlines that have shorten training footprint for people who already have the type? Or is that just wishful thinking. I will do what I have to do, just curious.

What are your intentions? How much total time do you have, and what timeframe are you talking about? Why are you wanting to get back in the game?

As far as another type ride, WHY WOULDN'T YOU WANT ANOTHER TYPE RIDE? You aren't going to be able to avoid going through the whole training regimen. You are going to HAVE to put in the effort. Why wouldn't you want TWO type ratings on your resume, unless being a CRJ pilot is your desired final job?

2200 hrs total. I am still in the game. I don’t want another type in the regional game, thats silly. Next type will be the next step. I don’t know if I want to leave where I am at yet. Feeling out others options. I have 2 type ratings (one is a common type). I’ll go through the training schedule. Just wasn’t sure if there was an abbreviated training program for people who have been out of the airplane for less than a year. And why are you typing in all caps? I can read if you type normal haha.

Effort not an issue. Raising kids, going to school full time, flying all night. Working extra to make more money to support my family. Putting in the Effort is no problem.

The issue is efficient effort to get to the next step. 2200 hours isn't even close, not yet, not even for a ULCC.

Sorry, but IMHO, you aren't going to be able to just coast to a major, if that's your intention. I don't think the pilot shortage is ever going to get that bad.

The sort of accepted norm is that you are going to have to have 1000 TPIC to be competitive for the upper tier majors - at least anytime soon. Multiple types, check airman, and a consistent record are all important. Job changes due to furloughs etc., are common and accepted, although the seniority loss still is a hit. Job changes because you changed your mind don't seem to sit well with the HR folks. A going in attitude that I'm not going to waste my time learning a new aircraft probably won't impress them either. Favorably impress them, anyway.

The capitals, by the way, were for emphasis.

What is so scary about a new type ride? If you just learn what is being taught in class and sim then a type ride is exactly as challenging as your yearly sim training rides in your already typed aircraft.
It may even be easier because by the time you get to the ride you know how the sim flies, vs your V1 cut or windshear profile on the first takeoff cold during AQP.

PSA is in Charlotte. I don't know how junior it is. Also, Air Whiskey has Columbia, which is very junior. You'll probably get a line after two months after IOE. And Captain upgrades are contingent upon reaching 1000 hrs SIC. There are 5 new hire captains holding reserve in Columbia.

If this guy doesn’t want the work of another type ride I don’t think he’d make it through training at ZW.
