Default Bose Aviation X in the CRJ?

New hire for SKYW and was wondering about my Bose Aviaiton X heaset being compatable. My new hire package says I must have my own headset. Is the Bose X overkill? I noticed a lot of posts for the telex and other "in-ear" headsets. I would rather not spend even more money on one but I guess if I have to, I can sell the Bose.

Thoughts?

Thanks

DD

I once jumped on an Eagle CRJ-700 where the crew didn't use any headsets at all, just hand-miked it the whole way, FWIW. Seems like a pretty quiet jet to me, as far as RJ's go. However, my experience with such aircraft is pretty limited.

Even though I'm pretty high on the Bose, I'd probably ask around a bit on this one to see what works the best before you plunk the grand on the Bose.

P.S. Congratulations on getting hired at SkyWest.

I have the Bose X and I loved them in the EMB-120, but not so much in the CRJ. The CRJ noise is a higher frequency and the Bose just seemed to make it louder; they’re design for a lower frequency. During several flights I tested the Bose, taking them on and off, turning the noise cancellation on and off almost in disbelief.

I bought the Telex 850's because they were designed for jet noise and I absolutely love them. They do an exceptional job canceling out the high frequency noise of the fans and wind. But if you like there are plenty of pilots that use the Bose in the CRJ and they need no adapting.

My opinion is that is the Bose isn't overkill they just don't work well in the CRJ. Although you can't beat them when it comes to turboprops or reciprocating a/c.

I've read a lot of good things about the 850's. I think I'll keep the Bose for now and try out the 850's when I get online. Good to know at least they will work. I like the idea of something smaller though. After 3 years flying the Otter, I am looking forward to flying something quieter.

Do a lot of guys fly w/out a headset? I feel like I am already deaf and would have difficulty hearing ATC otherwise...

Thanks for the quick response...

No, I have yet to fly or jumpseat with pilots who go topless. If you look at the below thread you'll see a discussion about going topless. We need to protect our hearing as much as we can and headsets like the Bose X and Telex 850's are our first line of defense.

I wore them in the crj, 200/700 and absolutely loved them. i rarely turned the anr on unless we were doing low and fast on a short flight. also...goood chance you'll upgrade first on the Brasilia...and trust me you'll want them then.

I use the Bose X in the CRJ 200 and I love it. I actually haven't heard the higher pitch noise that some speak of. I tried or am in the process of getting some ear molds done along with the Plantronics MS50 setup, but I keep on going back to the Bose. I love them. The microphone is a lot better and the quality is awesome. Try them out. I was initially all about downsizing, but I think that I will definitely carry the Bose everywhere I go.

I have a Lightspeed mach one and love it. I just had the earmolds done and with those they advertise up around 40db of passive protection. I have only used it in recips and turboprops and it is great. But I have seen an increasing number of corporate types using it and they seem to love it as well.

That will be the day I ask for that brick of a jump seat vs the empty one in 1st class!

I have the Bose in the RJ-200 and it sounds great. I wish it was smaller so it can fit better in the flight case.
