Safety Pilot question
 
Do any regional carriers not accept safety pilot time in ME aircraft? Has anyone has problems during the interview with safety pilot time, or do they look at it as just ME time and nothing else?

there's a pretty good chance their gonna ask about it, many individuals will think, how much "flying" were you doing while you were a safety pilot? Did being a safety pilot help your stick & rudder skills? Are you a better instrument pilot because you were the "safety" pilot in VFR weather doing instrument approaches? The way some of the regionals are getting right now, I wouldn't doubt if some of them are accepting safety pilot time in place of "SOME" multi-engine time, however, you'd have to be pretty darned close to their mins w/ regular multi before i'd even consider using 50 hrs multi- 50 hrs multi (safety pilot) time to get me in the door.

I have 19ME currently, need 50 for my choice airline. Bought 50hr block, roughly half will be safety pilot time. I have 4 internal rec's so I'm hoping that will help when the time comes.

I'm sorry, this should be so easy to figure out, but...where do you log "safety pilot" vs. logging multi time? It seems like when you're getting multi time, you're getting multi time. I am just starting multi, so I haven't really logged anything, but when I get my multi ticket, I just planned on building time like I did with single-engine...log the time I was flying the plane.

why would you write anything about safety pilot anyway. Just log it as pic multi and be done with it.

If you are the SP you do not have to log it as such. However it will be obvious to anyone looking through your book if there's SP time involved because...

1) The SP doesn't log landings.
2) On the legs where you are NOT the SP you must log hood time, and you must also log the name of the SP.

You cannot hide it without falsifying your logbook.

Most airlines will take SP time toward their mins, but a few have had issues in the past. Since you have an airline in mind, call and ask them if they allow SP time.

With a low 50 hours ME, an interview CA might be a little leary if half of your time was SP so you might get some grief over that (I had 350 ME at my first interview).

When you guys do this 'Safety Pilot' thing do you log all of the Hobbs time for the entire flight or just the time the other pilot spends under the hood?

If you buy 50 hours do you really get 50 hours or is it 25 under the hood & 25 safety pilot?

Is it all Cross-Country on IFR flight plans or is the time spent shooting practice approaches & holding?

You normally alternate legs. You log ALL of the leg you are flying, including the LDG. You also log the entire leg as hood time, minus a few tenths to account for taxi, TO, and LDG which are not done under the hood (0.3 is normally used). You also must log the name of the SP for your leg.

The other pilot logs time (but no hood or LDG's) for the exact time that you were under the hood. The SP can log night, XC, ME, or any other applicable flight condition (except IMC).

So if you buy two hours, you each get to log 1.7
1.0 for the leg you flew (including 0.7 hood and the LDG)
0.7 for the other guy's leg.

Note: Don't log actual IMC, cuz you can't have a SP in actual.

You dont log anytime as "safety Pilot". Just log it as PIC, either way its bull****, but logging Saftey Time is calling yourself out on bull****. And wether you do barrel rolls, or sit on the ramp while the engines are on....whats the difference ITS ALL FLIGHT TIME
