Active Duty Military RW to Airline/Guard

I went to the last RTAG convention in Ft. Rucker. I was sent by my Guard unit to help run a booth and talk to Active Duty pilots getting out and pursuing a career in the 121 world.
I was extremely surprised to find out 80% of people I spoke with were not familiar about the Guard and how we(pilots) can use the National Guard to make extra money and better our QOL in the airlines. Lots of options these days with most Guard units still looking for pilots.

I am curious if many on here got out of active duty to chase the airline life and joined a national guard unit? With the current state of the airlines, having the guard life to fall back on would be a nice financial safety net.

I am not a recruiter but do know my unit in SC is looking to fill several slots. Even full time positions.

Wish I could. I got the medical boot from active duty a couple years ago (three months short of my commitment...), and my condition has since improved dramatically. I went to a few reserve/guard recruiters to see if I could apply for a waiver and rejoin, but apparently once you get medically separated, you are permanently barred from service. Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me, but I don’t make the rules.

Mighty jealous—I’ve heard nothing but great things about the Guard.

I’d do it in a heartbeat...but I’m now 38 years old.

Give me an age waiver I'll be there the same day.

I’m a guardsman aviator in another state. Would like to ask some questions about SCARNG. Can you PM me?

Ouch! That really sucks and I am sorry to hear it.

I can put you in touch with our pilot R&R guy and see if there's anything we can do. Shoot me a PM with your info.

I was in the Air Force Reserves for the last recession and it really saved my butt. I switched to the Army NG over 7 years ago and its really helping out a lot these days.

I just hope all the other guys that left active duty for airlines got some sort of information about it. Always good to have something to fall back on in this industry.

Ha! I dont blame you. AD rotations must be absolutely painful. Our state is on about a 5 year bucket for rotating on some sort of deployment. Not sure how other states manage their rotation.

Isn't the air force like 3 months? Your wife might have a boyfriend but at least it won't be anything serious.

Ha! Yes. We were always jealous of the AF short deployment....
