Leave CFI job for 135 or wait for ENY?
 

As the title states. I’m torn on what to do. (assuming I’m offered the job). 1,000 hour CFI & also a cadet with Envoy.

I have an interview next week to fly a citation bravo for a smaller 135 company. I’d hate to burn bridges with Envoy/AA but I’m making quite literally less than minimum wage instructing at ATP after they cut our pay.

Is it career suicide to leave the cadet program for a charter job considering the climate in the industry?

Is it worth it to wait it out until the regionals start hiring again? I’d hate to leave a guaranteed job at envoy then they turn around & start classes again in the next 6 months

Ask yourself this question, with everything that is going on. Why would you wait for Envoy that isn’t a sure thing at this point in this environment when you have a good opportunity to get get some jet experience.......

You said it yourself, you will he making more money over your CFI job. If the Part 135 job opens up. I would take it, there will be plenty of opportunities down the road to get Part 121 time later...

Building your experience and resume is way better than waiting for a call about the cadet program. I would imagine Envoy would understand. Reach out to their recruiters and just let them know the situation and I’m sure they will understand.

AA is 10 years away after you get on property at ENY. It’s hard to say when ENY will hire again. Even then, someone with jet time will likely have a better set of opportunities available to them then a 2-3,000 hr CFI.

If you get the job, take it - no regrets to be had.

AA just retired 95 aircraft and deferred a number of aircraft on order for another 2-3 years. They have ~1600 mainline pilots furloughed and it may be another couple years before international and business flying return to normal - if they ever do. Unless there is some compelling reason to live in an Envoy or AA base for the next ten-12 years you would be far better off taking the 135 job and making yourself employable at Republic or Skywest or whatever regional with a base near you that starts hiring sooner.

The much vaunted ‘flow’ is more a gimmick to keep you at a wholly owned than it is to fill the pilot needs of the major.

I did corporate for 9 years. Don’t underestimate the doors that can open from corporate networking. It’s a forward move, no doubt about it—especially if there is some turbine PIC involved.

Dude, it’s jet time vs piston single, it’s a no brainer.

Think about this, when the wheels start turning again the market is still going to be competitive. Someone who has jet time will be ahead of someone else who stayed a CFI hoping their cadet gig pays off.

Maybe you have to go with another regional, but you’d almost certainly find yourself in a 121 cockpit sooner if you can diversify your resume.

I think people need to forget what the industry looked like in February, at least for the next 2-3 years. Cadet programs, hiring CFIs with 1450 piston single and 50 multi piston, etc..., all of that is out the window now. Do whatever it takes to add experience to your resume (okay don’t do PFT) because you will want to stand out for the next few years for sure.

I'm surprised this is a question and not a congratulations post. Plenty of us corporate guys go to the majors, some do a year at a regional for the 121 experience. Don't let your CFI expire, you can always do it for fun on the side. When the regionals start hitting again they will all be hiring, not just envoy. As someone else said, this is a no brainer.

Additionally corporate takes a lot of ex 121 guys and girls who say the grass is greener here. (tips, qol, overnights etc...).

Take it. Consider yourself extremely lucky to be offered a 135 gig with only 1,000 hours and no ATP when there's over-qualified/furloughed dudes out there. as already mentioned, no brainer -- take it.

ATP is going to ****can you once you reach 1500 hours any way and you won't be competitive with your numbers at a Regional for a couple years yet, so it is a no brainier. Take the job if you are lucky enough to be offered it.
