It was several years ago, but from what I remembered, he was fine as a pilot. He flew a good plane, very standardized, etc, and I guess wound tight may be a better description than saying that he’s a nut. He was very odd though and I could see how that would hurt someone in an interview. I’ve flown with some really strange ones at UAL and other companies too. My favorite one was the captain that thought that I should arm myself first thing in the morning when I wake up. He actually had a pistol on him to cook breakfast just in the event that a race riot broke out or society collapsed while he was scrambling some eggs. I have a house full of guns, but this guy was out there.

But it's not enough for most majors, they want people who will represent and lead and the fringier you are, the harder that gets. They also want people who won't create HR or CRM problems. PIC authority + OCD is a flag for that.

I know of a few odd ones who have been picked up by the legacies. The kind that make you scratch your head when you see great guys get passed up...

I always thought that 3 cups was just an inside joke since I never worked at XJT until I ended up on his jumpseat. That guy is a nut. If I remember correctly, UAL already shot him down at least once.
The rest of the XJT pilots that I met while jumpseating were all fantastic and I hope they get a job offer.
