Jet "University" - Thoughts?
Hey guys,
I'm about to finish up my Commercial.. and it's come down to two options -- either CFI or try my luck with something like Jet U. With the school I'm at now, between my multi rating and three CFI ratings and buying some multi time (enough so that I can instruct in that plane), the cost from here to go the instructor route will realistically be the same as the $27,000 I'd have to cough up to Jet U. Right now, I'm leaning toward instructing... but not by all too much. What are your thoughts on the place? What would you do in my shoes? Have you heard of them -- what kind of reputation do they have? Input, especially from guys at Pinnacle, would be really helpful. Thanks |
Don't know much about the place, but as far as I know those kind of places are considered to be more "buying" a regional job instead of earning it via instructing (or other methods); not cool with the majority of people here I don't think.
If I were you, and this is just coming from experience, I would definately get your CFI. The experiences I have had in the right seat have been invaluable, and I have learned a LOT more since instructing. I am leaving soon to go to a regional, but I feel a lot more prepared for training thanks to instructing. And besides, the way regionals are hiring at the moment you probably won't have to do it for all that long if you don't like it. Just my $0.02 |
First of all, if your CFI ratings and the insurance-minimum multi time are going to set you back $27k, you might consider another school. That's quite steep.
Secondly, you can just get your basic CFI, and then with the money you earn, pay for the other CFI ratings. I'd try to stay in the black as much as possible. Might take a little longer, but at least you'll be better off financially. Lastly, even if Jet U was cheaper, you still shouldn't go there. You don't want to be one of those guys. There's a reason why most everyone who's ever been a CFI says you learn a lot and should go that route. I think it's true. |
Check out jetcareers for more stuff on JetU....or maybe you already have...
I echo the above suggestions that the CFI is the way to go. JetU type, direct entry, programs aren't a good way to enter the career. I don't think we need 300 hour guys in the right seat of airline jets. Let's start setting the bar higher. |
Just by reading one of Jet U's ads you can see how they feel about CFI's and pilots who work hard to get an airline job..."Why be a CFI or fly turboprops when you want to fly jets?"

Jets are for hot tubs.

You can get all your flight instructor ratings (CFI II and MEI) at an ATP for around $6,000. My buddy did that and then got hired on as an instructor. He flew more than 100 hr/month all in the seminole. Way better deal if you ask me.

I'd stay away from that place. I know somebody who said the president tried to deposit his tuition check into his personal bank account, twice!! Luckily his bank didn't let it happen.
