Plus size pilots

I was sitting in EWR waiting for my ride to Niagara, lady calls up on the PA says the flights boarding, I get on, look into the front office and this oversized clone of super mario is sitting at the controls.
No neck whatsoever, I thought he was the FO until one of his chins slid back and revealed a 4th stripe.
Are there rules against this? What would he do to get out in an emergency?

Flyby1206 06-15-2007 05:39 AM

I would like to see him do an emergency exit from the cockpit windows!

I would like to have his AME.

We have our share of those guys at CAL. It's just one of those things where you think "damn, how could he do that to himself?"

I completely agree that obese pilots look sloppy and completely unprofessional. They are too big for the cockpits they work in and in an evacuation situation most would be more of a burden than a help.

That said, they are here to stay. America is getting fatter by the day, and discrimination by classification is illegal. If they can somehow get a first class medical, they are medically qualified for the job... therefore they cannot be discriminated against.

Does that go for flight attendants as well? There are some airlines with flight attendants much thinner than others, are those airlines discriminating?

It always amazed me that they dont have weight limits for pilots. If they can figure out that removing a 10 pound coffee maker will save XXXXX pounds of fuel every year then I wonder how much fuel is wasted hauling an obese pilot around? If it's $30,000 then to be fair I want my $30k that I'm saving the company by respecting my body...I'll take cash. :D

Out of respect to the guy, I wouldn't post it. He's probably self-conscious enough as it is about his weight, and is one of the types who doesn't do anything about it. I think of it sort of as a psychological issue. Also an A/C weight and balance issue ;)

It's kind of like the sister-in-law who's always complaining about her weight and will try every diet in the world but does not EXERCISE.

I haven't yet seen a fat XJT guy. A few that are a little bit on the porky side but not severely obese. Most of the types I've seen, no offense, are young skinny and quite dorky looking. LOL.

Dude, get rid of the photo.... that's just wrong.

Don't single someone out, there are many many pilots out there that could lose some serious pounds.......

As the unofficial and only self-proclaimed resident lawyer of these boards, I suggest you remove that picture. Like right now.
