Cologne in the Cockpit
I've noticed a good amount of pilots wearing strong cologne in the cockpit lately. I don't want to smell it. We're not on a date. Is this considered to be professional by some folks?
Curious. |

Curious. I’ve got to ask……is it really young pilots? |

Totally unsat and against the unwritten code of the cockpit. I wear cologne as well but certainly not up front. WTF is wrong with people? Use some common sense for crying out loud.

Leave the sex panther at home fellas. Smells like pure gasoline.

Whack we young pilots like to throw on about 2/3 of a can of AXE right before we plop down in the seat for ya.
It’s not a slight against younger pilots at all. We were all newbies at one time and had to figure out what’s socially acceptable at work. |
I was in a Walgreens during an overnight getting some Preparation H, and saw a BRUT gift set. I figured I scored and would be enhancing the cockpit aroma dynamics, now you guys are saying I'm unprofessional.

Covers up the rank smell of the other guys farts or last night's fish leftovers he brought for his meal
|
FWIW, I've noticed some deodorant/antiperspirants products have a strong cologne like smell. It's possible someone just bought a brand they weren't familiar with at the store across from the hotel because they ran out.
I can't imagine anyone really thinking cologne in the small cockpit is a good idea. |

It was my understanding that the airflow is such that farts aren't a factor and I've been letting them rip for the whole time I've been here.

Just blame it on the fwd lav. Then when the CA calls to the back and asks if someone used it and she says no you can enjoy the awkward moments. |

I mean would you rather someone smell good or like ****? The amount of captains I fly with who wear the same shirt 4 days in a row and thus smell like dirty gym socks is a lot worse than someone wearing a little cologne, of course there are always exceptions (you can go way overboard)

Leave it at home not in the flight deck. If we gotta run the smoke/fumes checklist I would have to wonder is it the other guys dior #5 or is actually something burning? Would run it either way but still.. Speaking of fuel from a poster above, did some googleFu and found that you could buy jet fuel scented cologne. They even make a jet fuel scented candle.

Sanicom for the fart countermeasures. If you are dropping ass, I’m bringing out the Copenhagen Wintergreen.

Farting is one of the great biological releases in life.
Second only to the release that is being attempted by wearing the cologne. Farting is 100% guaranteed, the cologne doesn't always work. Leave the cologne for after work, but try to save the farts for crop dusting the airport |
Beans, beans,
And musical fruit. The more you eat, The more you toot. |
Nevermind.
|
This is one of those things that would have been sorted out during a noob's first month with a line, back when we had hard lines and you flew with the same crew all month.
|
I notice it more with the new guys and yeah it probly would have been addressed during the hard line days.
I also think it may be more common with people who've never held another professional position. In my pre-aviation 9-5 corporate days, I'd never dream of showing up to the office smelling like an Abercrombie store. Professional = smell like nothing. New guys please take note. |
I almost donned an O2 mask once due to the other pilot's fine taste in colognes and complete lack of a sense of measure. But I also heard that no-one gives a damn on mainline aircraft whether you wear it or not - so which one is it?

I've never given it a thought at mainline... because nobody ever does it. |
It should be addressed in training. It’s probably in the company uniform standards as well; it is at WN.
Knock off the cologne. And the tuna. |
I like to use the art of shaving pre shave oil, shaving cream, and after shave lotion. One time I decided to try it on a trip. I walked by someone in the jet bridge and they said they really liked my cologne. I said I’m not wearing cologne. Then I realized it was my art of shaving stuff. Never used it since on a trip

O2 below XXX PSI due to cologne usage. |

Curious. Just a few boomers here and there https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...eda6fc98b8.jpg |
The thing about farts is this. If its just you and the other pilot and one of you farts, then reason dictates the one who did not fart will immediately know who it was. Now, if you have a third person in the cockpit, such as a jumpseater…well, now my friends, there’s a mystery afoot.
I love jumpseaters primarily for this reason…I can let out those slowww teasers with nary a sound. When the fumes rise, let the blames begin. |
Spirit has a notorious guy that loses it with the smell of cologne. If a FO shows up with any cologne on, he has him wash it off. A fed wanted to ride up front and he refused to let him because the Fed was soaked in cologne. He says he has an allergy for colognes, but clearly he is just overly irritated by it.
Our FLL base has some of the strongest offenders of the cologne, or "perfume" as they call it. It seems to be popular amongst the Cuban American pilots to lay that spray on, at Spirit at least |

Heavy cologne does seem to be part of some cultures. I'd rather that than BO, bad breath, or tuna packets though. Sharing a cockpit isn't always roses, is it?
