pilot shortage?
Ive read about the shortage of pilots around the world, and Im now wondering, is this a good time to be looking for a job or a dangerious time to fly with minimums going down?
over the next 10 years, are a lot of people going to die from this?

When your a week or so from your commercial checkride you can start applying...so yeah. Question is would you? Or would you be man enough to admit you still have a lot to learn before you put yourself in front of 48 pax shooting a single-engine localizer only down to mins with a 30kt x-wind next to a captain who has passed out?
Do you think these new guys are getting easier training because they have less hours? Standards are standards. Hence.....the washouts.
Umm...thats a little extreme.

Its a good time to be looking for a job if you are prepared to make ~$20k first year, probably be based somewhere across the country from where you want to be and work long days with short nights. Youll fly a small turboprop or regional jet, not a 767 across the pond to Paris for an overnight. My best advice is to get yourself informed about what is waiting ahead. It is survival of the fittest.

Thats what i was thinking. If i was to get a job right off the bat, and i don't wash out, does that mean im ready or i was just good enough for them to get a seat filler?
I know i have a lot to learn but other then pay out of pocket or CFI and save students from killing themselves is there any way to learn

Your not going to get hired anywhere unless you really have a current flying job and good recency. Easiest way to obtain that is to at least knock out your CFI single and start teaching. I spent next to nothing getting my CFI...it's easy and it will show others you have the knowledge to teach flight. Look through the interview gouges, 99% of pilots who interviewed have their CFI..if not all three.

I agreee with Squack, I have 500ish hoursTT with a little over 110 ME, I dont have my CFI, I got lucky and got a job flying a Cherokee Six for a construction company, the got on with a 135 King Air/402 gig last summer and have been flying there as well as working Dispatch for a large operator. Yes I have tried to not go the CFI route, however, I reccomend either CFI ing or getting in somewhere like I did to work in a crew environment. I learned more in the first 3 mo. doing the 135 stuff than I did in all of my previous flying experience. Yes I still have much to learn, as all of us low timers do, but I will say that I did start applying with 400TT and now have had 5-6 companies call me for interviews. I ve had one, and it went well. But I am taking everything with a grain of salt and learning each step of the way. I did my training at Delta Connection Academy in college and they gear your training towards airline flying. However, when I got the dispatch/operations jobout of college in the 135 Corporate side, I saw a whole nother side of the industry, both have their pros and cons. If you can get some experience at both, I think that it's extremely beneficial. Knock on wood, I dont regret a day after college yet in teh wroking world as it I have experienced a TON. I am ready to give the airline thing a shot so we ll see what happens, I am 25 and if all works out, I can make a 40 yr. career out of it. If I go to a regional, I will sacrifice 40% of my pay that I make now my first year, but it s what I want to do....be a commercial airline pilot. So we'll give it a shot and see how it goes. Best of luck.

My main thing about the CFI is that i have no desire to teach, ive tutored in math and computer science hated it. I just dont think i make an effective teacher. And secondly when i got my PPL in Aug. 01 i worked my ass off digging ditches and pouring concrete for my flight instructor for 8 bucks an hour towards flight time. Now its so expencive the only ones training are the rich who will never know what its like to pour sweat for 12 hours so you can get a one hour lesson in a broken down 152. Honestly if can avoid teaching though any means ill do it, even if it takes an extra year of working somewhere else to pay for it
