senority in training

Are most companies giving out senority numbers and aircraft and base assignments based on age? i.e., the oldest guy in class is most senior and gets his choice...etc.

That's usually how it's done but some companies also use the last 4 of you social security

Pilotpip 07-12-2007 06:04 PM

I think more do something more easily distinguished. Something like last four digits of your SSN, birthdate, date of hire.

As for aircraft and base assignments it's simply where they need bodies. Continental, Delta, UPS, and FedEx have recently been putting new hires in their larger widebody aircraft (I don't know what the percentages are but I know it happens). Just depends where the need is.

Kind of hard to assign seniority within a class by date of hire...

At TSA, we were ordered by the last four digits of our SSNs. At CHQ, it's by age. The vast majority of airlines use one of these two methods. Eagle I know is age, and I believe SKW is by SSN.

HercDriver130 07-12-2007 06:24 PM

It was age years ago when i was at AE....just wondering

chitownpilot 07-12-2007 07:08 PM

SkyWest does it by the last 4 of your SSN....I got the awesome distinction of being the most junior CRJ FO at the company for 3 weeks. On the lighter side though, my hire date is 5/28/07 and there are already 100 FO's under me, not counting the new-hire EMB-120 classes that have started also (2 I think).

Slice 07-12-2007 07:15 PM

UPS is D.O.B. but it meant nothing in class because everyone was assigned what they got not given a choice.

FDX is last four of your SSN from highest to lowest...9999 beats 0001.

mine is 8898...:)

At TSA, where it was low-beats-high, I had a classmate who was 9995.

July 17 Interview

I have an interview with XJT on July 17. Even though a CA base would be fine since am already out west. What would the chance be for EWR out of training?

Not sure. EWR is shrinking and will be even more so when Colgan comes with their Q400s. So you might be able to get it but be on reserve for a long time. I am not a commuter but from what I understand EWR sucks to commute to due to the delays and most trips are either not commutable at all or only commutable on one end (either early show, late off or both).

Ewr

What if I want to move and get a crashpad or apartment in or around EWR?

What if what? Not sure I understand your question.

hi

Currently mountains out west are getting boring. In need of a change and am currently single though looking. My question to you freeze is: I am willing to pick up and move to EWR and not commute. Even with it being downsized u think it could work out?

I'm not sure you are going to like trading the west coast/mountains for the east coast but If you want to move to EWR, go nuts. At least you will be kind of used to the cost of living (depending on where you lived out west). But if I had to guess, I would imagine the time spent on reserve will increase in EWR before it decreases. The EWR lines have been decreasing slowly for a long time and Colgan is coming in '08 with their Q400s to do CAL flying. Most new hires are going out west which means that fewer people are going to EWR and then bidding out. If the trend continues then EWR could become like CLE (very senior, little movement, reserve time measured in YEARS, crappy lines). Do new hires still go to CLE? Yes, they just never get off reserve and most just bid out when they can. Could EWR end up that way? Who knows. If you live in base, reserve isn't too terrible at XJT. You don't get abused near as bad as some other places and the reserve rules are fairly decent (12 hour call outs, aggressive trip pickup, 11-12 days off guaranteed, immovable days off, etc).

And you think the air traffic out East will make up for the scenery you lose?! NO way dude...Flying East coast day in and day out can get super-boring super-quick. The grass isn't always greener, as they say!

Lets say ferry flights and instructing for four years took its tool.
Flying into and/or around SFO,OAK,LAX,SAN,LAS,TIJ,PHX,ABQ,DEN,VNY to name a few. As to living fees yes I am familiar with them. Born and raised on pacific ocean. Like snow and looking for a nice Jewish Girl to! :)

Would really like to go east. Willing to get a crash-pad if needed. Really find the NE-Corridor fun sometimes. Curious to know what it is like with an EWR ground delay, lines of TS and can't go east from a western dept into EWR and need deviation to another location. Lets just say LAX or OAK or SFO would be a cake walk to live or commute :)

I can understand - I grew up in the craziness that is NYC...it can be intoxicating...great to visit, but bordering on lousy to live in. I guess what I meant by my previous post was that you might want to look into getting on with a carrier that will fly you everywhere. Anywhere in the country is good - in small doses (some in smaller doses than others haha). XJT might be a great fit for you then...also think SKW. Don't know what Lines look like for the Jets at Eagle - gotta ask somebody else, but that might also be an option for you?

Whatever you decide - best of luck!

Since I can not PM you yet. Could you please explicate and give examples and substance to support previous statement. Do hope XJT works A) Get Job, B)Pass training and C)get EWR.
