Team Newark

Just got the call from manpower planning and it looks like i am joining team newark. Looking for any advice on crashpads, preferably one that i won't get shot at everytime i go outside if that's possible. Also wondering how much flying i should be able to get while on reserve. Any how should be out there in about two to three weeks. I am starting OE in Cleveland on monday the 24th. Thanks for the advice! :D

I hear a hotel has a crashpad for 185 a month and 24 van service forgot the name but someone will have it for you soon. In Newark you won't sit reserve at all i had very few days that they did not call me and you can always pick up something in the aggresive pick up window. As far as getting shot your on your own keep your head down thats all i can say.

That's sounds good, do you know how many people you share the room with?

How long of a drive from EWR to JFK, that crashpad seems nice, I am jfk based, I live DRIVABLE distance BUT traffic is a huge deal and 195 seems great for maybe a night here or there

Welcome to Newark man, you're gonna love it here! You'll get used a lot on reserve, which shouldn't even last that long. Since I've been here (October), every single capt i've flown with has been awesome, and I already have a lot of good overnight stories (us newark crews are known for partying the most). As far as the crashpad situation, I can't really help cus I live here, but it seems like the safest neighborhood would be the Ironbound area of Newark. There's always Hoboken and Bayonne as well, very safe places. Just look in the crew room, you'll see ads posted everywhere for crashpads.

being a north jersey native, i consider the drive or train far. it will take at least an hour drive from ewr to jfk but the way traffic is especially once youve cross the bridge or tunnels expect bumper to bumper traffic. expect to spend about 20 dollars in tolls on each drive into new york.

I put EWR as my #1 choice! I have a couple friends there already and i like the northeast much more then any other part of the country. Plus Saab is there so you know it has to be a blast

Speaking of colgan. i was on final for 22 and another guy I don't know what he was in got real slow, so slow the controller stated "this is Newark international Airpot 160 is as slow as you can get here" that made me think about the q400's, are they going to allow the turboprops back in EWR and can they keep the speed up.

I think the problem is on departures, they cant climb as quickly as a jet, on approach though they can go be really fast and slow up very quickly, although the Q only has two throttles unlike the SAAB, Dash-8 1/2/3, Beech where you can shove the props forward and the airplane practically falls out of the sky......... but from what I hear the Q isnt slow at all, but with Colgans MX, who the hell knows..................

PS I am not sure about the Q's performace on climb but I have had guys at Colgan who have never flown the thing tell me it can climb faster than a 737, in which of course I laughed at them:p, but still they tell me it can climb............

A Q400 with the optional speed tape mod (ordered by colgan) will indeed out climb an F16... at least that is what Mikey has been saying, so you know it's gotta be true

How realistic would it be to live near Newark but be based out of JFK? Also does anyone know of any areas to avoid (or the lesser evils) around JFK? Im going to have to go there after training and just trying to get a feel for what to look for and expect. If it helps, I plan on bringing my car up if it's needed.

I suggest taking a look on your own, what one person thinks isn't a bad neighborhood another does. I live in a very safe part of Philly and when my little brother comes down he thinks its the slums and scarey....... I am thinking of getting a crashpad for the few months Im on reserve, not sure though..... I can JUST make it there in 2 hours, but am nervous about that, (traffic obvi)..... Nice areas Hoboken NJ, Jersey City NJ, Weehawken, anywhere in Manhattan (for the most part lol) Kew Gardens I hear is nice, Astoria....... This is comming from someone not from NY so.......

Superpilot92 07-18-2007 05:54 PM

i stayed at www.bergenpointvillage.com it was ok and the van is always there and on time every day. its in bayonne

MetJet23 07-18-2007 06:27 PM

Diver...being a New Yorker, I definitely wouldn't feel too good about having to make the commute from EWR to JFK within two hours at certain points of the day. It's a coin toss with all the possibilites as far as traffic goes. If you're going to have a car, there are many reasonable and safe options within Queens that would keep you close enough to JFK to ensure being there within two hours - even if the traffic is ridiculous. Astoria, Bayside, Flushing, Kew Gardens, etc.. All depends on how long you would be looking to be around and what you want to pay.
