Default FAA upgrade requirements

Over a couple beers the other night some friends and I were discussing how a "300 hr wonder" is able to upgrade after a couple years at a regional. the ATP requires 250 PIC, which can be reduced to 125 PIC with 121 experience. If one of these young guys doesn't have 125 PIC, is he/she going to have to go rent a plane to grab those hours? Just curious to see what y'all interpretation of this subject is.

Cheers

It depensd on whether the flying requires ICAO ATP priveleges for international flying.

ICAO Required: 1200 hours of actual PIC or... You can rent an airplane to get to 150 hours of actual PIC. Then you will need an additional 2100 hours as a 121 SIC to qualify for ICAO privileges.

No ICAO Requirement: You just need 250 hours PIC. Whatever you had from flight training counts, plus you can count time as "SIC performing the duties of the PIC". If (and ONLY if) your airline allows your CA to allow YOU to "perform the duties of the PIC".

If you can get your ATP without 250 PIC. I know one company gives you more OE if you do not have 250 PIC.

If you do not have 150 PIC then you get an ICAO restriction on your ATP.
