You are correct about bonuses in the real world, but 100% wrong about the airline world. This is what is grossly wrong with the bonus concept in the airline world...WE CAN"T JUST GO GET ANOTHER JOB LIKE A CIVILIAN! WE ARE SLAVES TO THE SENIORITY/LONGEVITY SYSTEM! What good is a $5K bonus if you take a $50K pay cut to get it???

We are along for the ride at our respective airlines, so we need to make sure the ride is a good one...

I totally agree. These guys should have gone to the majors a long time ago. Why they've stuck around is anyone's guess.

Not much of a guess required.

A 15 year ERJ Captain makes at least $80,000.

If that Captain were hired at WN, he'd make about $45,000 that first year,
$85K the second, $95 the third, and finally break even making about $105 in the fourth year. If he worked more than the bare minimum Eagle, it would take 5 years to break even.

If he went to jetBlue, his pay cut would last until he upgraded, after at least 3 years, and he'd need to recoup about an average loss of pay of $26,600 for those three years, or about 33% of his Eagle pay.

Now assuming he has a mortgage, car payment, kids to put braces on or college tuition to pay for, exactly how does he take a 33% pay cut for three years?

It shoudn't take a financial genius to realize that the cost of making the jump to a potentially better paying job may well be prohibitive to guys who have already esablished families, and aren't living in Mom & Dad's basement.

Well, that's their decision. Not my problem. I'm smart enough not to have kids.

It's OK if these old coots want to stay at the regionals. Soon, the majors will run out of candidates with turbine PIC, and they will look to us regional FO's to hire. Majors are starting hire again. The pilot shortage will soon reach the majors. If these guys want to stay, fine. I will gladly move on without them.

I've heard a lot of stuff on here that comes off as arrogant, pig headed, and ignorant. But that has got to be one of the dumbest things I have ever read on this forum.

How are you smart for not having kids? How are pilots with families dumber than you? Why is it any of your business that they have to make decisions with someone else's best interest at heart?

I'm not one to take offense, or fan the flame, but that is just ridiculous.

Fine with me, because social security is a socialist program that needs to be done away with. FDR was a sorry commie socialist. Everyone needs to save up for their old age on their own, and not expect a handout from the government.
