Mayday

Around 1030 EST this morning there was a mayday on guard from a guy saying he was going down 2 miles north of.....and then it cut out. This took place in norther NC or southern VA. Did anyone else hear this or have any info on it? My CA and I were kinda stunned when it all started happening. Jet Blue was relaying info to Patomic who was monitoring at the time and trying to get info from anyone who heard anything.

The one thing that torqued me during all this though was some CAP guy flying around and tried fussing at ppl for talking on guard. Someone else piped up thankfully and said they were doing what they needed to be doing and to back off. The CAP guy shut up. Whoever said that...thank you.

there was a plane full of preachers that went down yester day in that area i think...at least i thought it was yesterday.

This was this morning, 9-3 on my way back from GSO to DCA. I didn't hear about that one. Thanks. It hits home when you're flying and hear all this happening on the radio. Needless to say, the cockpit got really quiet for a while.

In that area, you were probably talking to Potomac. :)

If you go to the upper left corner of the FAA website, there's a link to Accident and Incident data. Follow that link, then click "Preliminary Accident and Incident Data". Right now, the data stops on August 31st, I assume because no one was updating it over the holiday weekend. If you wait a day or two, I'm sure something will turn up related to your mayday call. I'd be willing to bet that since there's no news about a crash at that time on the internet, the pilot made it down safely. I remember once on a cross country flight as a student, hearing someone with engine problems trying to make it to an airport to land. It's really an eerie feeling listening to that kind of thing while you're up there.

If they got down safely and did not 'bend' the airplane up - you may never see it on the .gov site - I asked an FAA inspector about that having heard a few guys loose engines over the years.... It has to have damage to control surfaces or firewall and or injuries is what he said...

I heard it too going from PHL to CAE. We asked Wash if everyone was alright, and they said they were not sure at this point.

Just saw on the news that there was a plane crash yesterday morning in PA where the 71 yr old pilot was killed a couple miles from the airport. The Jet Blue was at FL370 and we were at FL240. May be why we were able to hear the whole conversation.

always humbling.

There was a Comair pilot who crashed in Ohio and received burns to over 90 percent of his body. Someone died in the crash as well. This happened yesterday (Labor Day) so I doubt this is what you heard, but maybe.
