PSA Schedules & Commuting
Does anyone know how commutable the schedules are at PSA? I'm starting class next week and plan to live in DAY for the next year or so because it's close to home. But eventually I'd like to commute from Orlando to Charlotte, but I'm not sure how easy that would be. Any current or former PSA peope care to comment? Is it relatively easy or hard to get commutable trips out of CLT? I wouldn't transfer to CLT until I could hold a line, and would be willing to stay in DAY for a year or more. Just wondering what the prospects look like. Thanks in advance!

From my experience occasionally jumpseating to Orlando and knowing Pilots that commute from MCO, heck anywhere in Florida, it's a nightmare...

commuting
good question...
I too would like to commute from Orlando. Any opinions on what regional and where would be the easiest commute fro MCO? Thanks for any input |

If you dare work at Mesa, you may be able to get on the Freedom side. They have an MCO base. Comair is the only other regional I know of that has an MCO base but it's closing this month I think. It was senior anyway. |
Eagle has MIA.

Hey I am an KORL (keep our 172 there) guy too who would love to commute from MCO but is WAY hesitant of Mesa...
Best schedules I have heard of to commute from MCO are - EWR, IAH, ATL I need some more twin time (1380TT 80ME) any of you MCO guys got any suggestions.... Thanks |
Thanks for the info. Dog, there is always the safety pilot thing. I'm in the act of getting current again to pursue the airline thing. I wouldn't mind sharing some multi time or even 172 time for that matter.

Is Miami pretty senior for Eagle?

Cool - I am working on my cfi/mei and the time for my atp - I only fly on the right seat in anything I fly - you can have the left if you help with the costs...
I am new to this site so try to message me - never got one to know if it works - else I'll post my e-mail... jim |
Jim,
I've been out of the game for a while and have gotten the bug to get back in. I did the accelerated flight school thing right before 9/11 and left aviation for a few years. I've only got about 500 hours or so, but over 200 multi. A buddy of mine is doing the BFR thing for me down in Kissimmee this week. I was thinking of going to Air Orlando to do my instrument proficiency deal. Its coming back fast but I have to jump through all the hoops again. I'm new to this site as well and can't send private messages for another few posts. |

Thanks www.flyaviator.com They sell 100 and 50 hr blocks. Ask Mike if he would be willing to let you buy a 20hr block. It would be easier to go there in person and speak with him. You'll get the gate keeper from hell if you try calling. PM me if you have any questions. BTW, Florida is aweful to commute from. Even positive space flying is painfull. |
av8tr - thanks I may do that... I ate lunch at FPR yesterday at the Tiki... where is Ari on the field?
Noleone - try Capflying.com that is a decent club - way less costly than Air Orlando... they have a Grumman Cougar that is about $100 and hour dry - we could split that and build some time... |
Dfw
Any one know how commutable is DFW? I’m getting out of the navy soon and looking at moving there. Thanks.
|
I'm going to the 10/1 class with PSA and live near DTW. Friends at NWA say that flights to CLT are full of commuters as well, so you may have problems in both directions.
Have you heard about reserve time at DAY? I'm thinking about bidding it but would like to know how long I would be on reserve. |

Florida Flyer, I would certainly appreciate anything you can send me. I suspected the long wait for CLT, so I am going to try and build some seniority out of DAY and then see what happens. Since I live just north of Detroit, DAY works well for me anyhow. For what it is worth, look at TYS (Knoxville). My NWA friends say that the trips out of Detroit to TYS are usually fairly open and don't have a lot of commuters.

Heya Florida Flyer..10/1 PSA class here too. would love a heaping spoonful of anything you pick up next week. See you around

Thanks AV8 - I probably will have to do that... I was thinking I need about 100 more hours so that I hit 1500 and can do the ATP as well....
Would having an ATP and 1500 help in upgrade times at the smaller regionals? |
FlyingDog, I'm not 100% certain about this, but my understanding is that each airline has it's own upgrade criteria - sometimes multiple criteria. For example, Pinnacle has a "Pilot Mentoring" program that allows for an upgrade at 1500 hours as long as you have 1000 in a Pinnacle CRJ. Otherwise you are looking at about 2500. The issue is low-time pilots (I know someone hired into Pinnacle at about 194 hours) and that, if you consider it, by the time he hits 1500 hours, he will have almost 1300 in the CRJ and he already has his ATP written. That is just as much time, if not more, as someone who hires in at 1500 hours after CFI'ing and then upgrades at 2500.
I will leave the discussion of low-time pilots to other posts, but 1300 hours as an F/O should be reasonable time to consider an upgrade, regardless of what your numbers were when you started. Good luck! |

Their bases are DAY, CLT, TYS. Seems pretty far from DFW. I'm a new hire so I don't know what the commute realistically is like. A lot of it has to do with your schedule and how long you are on reserve time. Why not Xjet, Eagle, or Republic. I think they have bases near you. just my 2cents. |
why in gods name would you want to fly for PSA...sorry to hear of your choices...
|
Maybe I will as a last resort. Better then applying for unemployment is all. Do you think ASA is any better?

I am new to this site so try to message me - never got one to know if it works - else I'll post my e-mail... jim I am a recently-rated instrument pilot flying out of KORL and looking to build time towards a commercial rating in a 172. I have 100 TT and 83 hrs in a G1000 panel 172. I'd be interested in sharing costs and flying a bunch of long x-country flights - one of us under the hood / one of us safety pilot and both logging PIC. I want to fly 5-6 days/week if you are up for it! I need at least 100 hrs... I would PM ya'll but don't have enough posts, so please email me at [email protected] |
