There have been more than a couple FOs here at ExpressJet that have gotten on with CAL before ever upgrading on the RJ. Just get a couple hundred hours of turbine 121 time, show you can pass a training program and ride daddy's coat tails right into a 737 cockpit at CAL. Disgusting but not unheard of.
Why is it disgusting. Don't hate somebody because they took advantage of the resources they have available. Life isn't fair. Some people are born into opportunity or wealth, others have to earn it. Once you realize that, you'll learn to fend for yourself and make your own opportunities happen. If you can honestly say that you wouldn't have done the same thing if the opportunity presented itself, then you can call it disgusting. Otherwise you're hypocritical. As slice said, there are some potential downsides to a fast track career. Will it mean that this person (or others like him) won't succeed? Not necessarily, but don't hate them for succeeding as a result of networking, luck, or some other factor. Personally, I find it impressive. |

In the case of CAL, he may not have too much to worry about...737 upgrade is going faster than RJ upgrade at a lot of regionals.

I was BS'ing with a 757 CAL Capt. at the bar a few weeks ago on an overnight. She told me that they are huuuge on nepetism. if you have family members who work there, its very likely that you'll get hired on before you meet the requirements. i know a guy who did 2 years at eagle...never upgraded and hes on the 737 at CAL.

You aren't required to have turbine PIC. I'll be sending my resume there soon enough. It's a gamble on what happens if they start furloughing people but sometimes you just gotta take it in stride. I want my next job to be my last but we'll see what cards life feels like dealing me. Hell who knows I could be overseas by then flying for someone by then anyway.

With upgrades in the 737 at CAL holding at under 3 yrs and 30+ new aircraft coming to the fleet and 200+ ca. retiring next year. He is in a great spot. Definately something to be envious of. |

Yeah I see a lot of young F/O's over there, half of them wont even look you in the eye because they realize how easy it was for them to go there. It used to annoy me but in reality thats life, networking, friends of the family, its like that in every industry. I bet some of those kids dont even appreciate where they are, I would imagine those that "paid there dues" that are over there are more appreciative. If my father worked at CAL I would expect the same thing. I wouldn't focus too much of your time on it, it is what it its, just do yourself a favor don't be bitter and don't be jealous. I would love to go to CAL but I am enjoying my time here, however long it may be. Everybody is so focused on the upgrade, the "major" the bigger house, the cars blah bah. You will most likely get to where you want to go, may take longer than your buddy but so what.......... enjoy where your at in life because you dont want to look back when your 50 and wish you would have enjoyed the time you spent "hand-Flying" and drinking beers with a crew that you have much more in common with then some of the guys over at CAL. As more airlines hire I think CAL will be less and less everyones favorite, their contract & pay blow and until they change that, if they even do, Delta, United, SWA, UPS etc would be more desirable than CAL. I would imagine unless you were a local at one of their three terrible bases, Other airlines offer much more in terms of pay and QOL.
I am jealous of the F/A's though, CAL has some hot ones........... Horrible bases? lets face it saab we both live in the EWR area..it would be sweet.. i dont think EWR would be a horrible base, I would take any of the new yorks or Philadelphia..... |

Oh yeah, for us its great but come on, how many people would hate to be based in EWR? For me, its the greatest thing in the world, but for the majority of the pilots I would imagine its not the best base

The mile square city was both the most expensive but best time I've ever had - without even trying. God I miss that place. I could fish for them right off my balcony on Washington and First. If you haven't done it - make it to their St. Patty's party next year. (not on the 17th)

Its CAL, nothing to be envious of.
|
Explain why CAL is so much worse than the rest? They are in contract negotiations right now and with the company making money they should come out looking great. I have a couple friends there and both love it.
|
The biggest complaints from CAL are the low pay, PBS, and Larry the bean-counting bobble head. The pay should come up but it's never easy to get that higher and their PBS is one of the worst in the industry.
