Anyone Completed the Compass at Home Study?

I have accepted a offer from Compass in the 175. As I understand the course ERJ-175 course will be a at home study. Has anyone completed this yet? If so how was it? Curious for any incite.

you know there are rumors floating around about the compass/rah relationship and based on the way they are training at compass when compared with our aerodata "training" its suprisingly familiar!

Yeah, RAH is the only other airline that uses Aerodata.

I could care less about any rumors, just looking for an answer to my question.

so how are you getting paid for this home study?

Pilot41 11-04-2007 05:40 PM

Again not the answer to the question.

XtremeF150 11-04-2007 10:39 PM

I heard they were only paying 15 hours for the home study and not crediting anyone for gaurentee during that time period....another words you get 15 x 23.18 for the first month. True you are not working much but that is definately not what I would expect.
This is info I heard from a new hire recently, so it is seconf hand so take it for what it is worth.

It's 18.5 hours of pay to be exact. The explanation I was given was that the FAA considers it to be 18.5 hours of ground instruction so that's what they're paying. If you can get through it in 18 hours you're a faster reader/testtaker than I...

Sounds like you are going though or have gone through to home study course. I'm just trying to gain a little insight on how it works and what to expect.

I am doing the home study right now. It is pretty in depth. I am pretty impressed with the quality of the training software for the 175. The online courses written by Compass are ok as well. I am getting close to being done with everything and have already spent more than 50 hours on it, and I probably have about 10-15 hours more to do. Now I am not the fastest of readers, and I have been typing out a study guide as I go... so that may be adding a bit of time to the course. Hope that helps.

Thanks Joeflys

I finished the home study mid OCT. Wasn't to bad you have to work at it a little at a time. Keep in mind that after you leave MSP you wont have access to the system for about 5 or 6 days. You can access the systems section without being signed in up to the final systems exam. At that point you need to be signed in to complete that section. You do have to be signed in to do the entire FOM portion.

Hope that helps

Thanks mario

Two sections: General Operating Subjects (GOS) covers general stuff (meteorology, regulations, charts, etc) plus the FOM, and has a written exam for each subject that you need to get 80% on to pass; after two fails it gets locked although you can talk to an instructor to get it reset. This section of CBT was made by non-pilots in the nwa training department and the instructors at Compass say it was pretty horrible in the beginning and they've been continuously working to improve it. Still some rough edges...I would say the main problem is a disconnect between the material presented in the CBT and what's tested on the quizzes. I'd recommend reading the appropriate sections of the FOM before taking the quizzes rather than relying on the CBT to teach you everything that'll be tested.

The E175 CBT was not put together by Compass or NWA, and is pretty decent. Only complaint is that some of the stuff they taught is wrong for the E175 (used E170 numbers). There are short quizzes throughout which do not impact your final grade. There's a 80 question multiple choice written exam at the end, though. It merits studying up for.

Hope that helps.
