Any of you guys still flight instruct?

Does anyone on here flight instruct on the side... "for compensation?" Most companies seem to have an issue with that because of the timing out rule -- but I've heard from a lot of captains that "everyone does it." Any input?

No, "everyone" doesn't. You might be able to skirt by a few hours here and there (like doing a BFR or IPC for somebody, for example) but regularly flying for compensation outside of your air carrier without permission from management can be grounds for termination.

I know a couple FO's who got the thumbs-up from the Chief with the stipulation that "it better not interfere with your 121 work". One guy I know started back in Jan or Feb, and when I talked to him a month ago he said it hadn't been an issue, and wasn't going to be either.

Well, I fly 100 hrs a month (121) so the only way I would be able to instruct is not for pay. Also, I am the F/O Rep here in EWR, and probably wouldn't be a good idea to break the rules:D. However I am going up in a 172 tomorrow morning out of CDW, first time in 2 years, Im going with an instructor, can't wait :)

I believe this is a common misconception. It is my understanding that Flight Instruction does not count as "Commercial flying" with regards to 121.471 as it is does not fit the definition of "air commerce."

Flight instruction is allowed by Mesaba in this regard since it does not affect your 121 flight time limitations. You are still bound by 61.195 limiting flight instruction to 8 hours per day.

If you need verification, contact your local FSDO.

§ 121.471 Flight time limitations and rest requirements: All flight crewmembers.

(a) No certificate holder conducting domestic operations may schedule any flight crewmember and no flight crewmember may accept an assignment for flight time in scheduled air transportation or in other commercial flying if that crewmember's total flight time in all commercial flying will exceed—
(1) 1,000 hours in any calendar year;
(2) 100 hours in any calendar month;
(3) 30 hours in any 7 consecutive days;
(4) 8 hours between required rest periods.

i think you would have a hard time explaining that flight instructing on the side isn't commercial flying while receiving compensation. i also think you would have a harder time if you flight instructed for 5 hours that day and then go do a high speed or something that requires reduced rest. if the feds were to look at the logbook, i don't think they would be to pleased with what they saw.

as always pinnacle makes things easy on us.. do you want to flight instruct on the side??? the answer is NO YOU CANT...

Its simple really, look at your CFI cerificate, it says "valid only when accompanied by pilot certificate no. XXXXXXX. Thats the number of your Commercial or ATP certificate. Thats means its a commercial operation. It counts towards your times. If you are going to teach make sure you dont exceed your times...I did it when I was on reserve and wasnt flying much.

Actually I think it is a misconception that it doesn't count toward your commercial flight time limits. We went through this not to long ago on here, I was able to find some FAA interps stating it goes against 121 and 135 flight time limits, however the search function on this forum stinks so I can't pull up the thread.

FWIW, ALPA produced a little booklet about flight time limits and it also said flight instruction counts against your limits. I'm too lazy to look it up now but someone might be able to produce it.
