Start over and design an airliner not a stretched biz jet.
We have auto anti ice on some of the B747-400s that I fly and the system sux. FO |

Grind up 85% of them or send them to mainline. Pay a professional wage.

So I got thinking from the thread about BlowJet buying the CRJ Next Gen. Looked it up on Bombardier dot com if anyone is interested.
Looks like most of the improvement is in the cabin and no matter how you slice it, it's an awfully cramped place to be unless you're in the 'first class' () section. I suppose any improvement is better than no improvement, but seems like putting frosting on a piece of dog crap if you know what I mean. Now I fly the CRJ and am after nearly 4 years slowly accepting it. But I only fly the -200 version. I have sat on the jumpseat of the -700 and thought that there were a number of meaningful improvements on that airplane. - more power - leading edge slats/revised wing = slower approach speeds, greater stability (or so it seemed from the jumpseat at FL380, a serious pucker factor altitude in the -200) - simplification of a few systems. But where could the next generation CRJ be improved from the cockpit perspective? First I would have to suggest autothrottles. Seems like a luxury and all, but it supposedly does actually reduce fuel burn. And even a 1%-2% fuel burn improvement is significant. Second, seems like the old-fashioned CRT screens out to be replaced with LCD. LCDs are used in a number of newer machines. It saves weight not only in the screen, but in the cooling and mounting hardware. There must be a couple hundred pounds to be saved with all that hardware and heavy screens. Third, ???? Thoughts? BTW, this comes from the fact that it's winter and not much to do on a Saturday afternoon..... Biggest drawback apart from the cockpit size is the avionics. Avionics are outdated and the autopilot is not as good as EMB 175 from people who flew both CRJ900 and EMB 175. |

As far as the automatic anti ice is concerned, it is nice, assuming it's working properly. When you are climbing out and it's VFR, TAT/SAT are well above freezing and it just decides to kick on and off because the ice detectors are messed up, it's a pain. I'd rather have 100% control than the auto system it has. Besides, if it was truly automated, you would be able to take off with the packs on and not have to mess with the knob on the overhead panel what so ever.
I just wish the 145 had a coffee maker! :( |

You don't take off with the packs on? We stopped doing that b/c of the whole "mist in the cabin" deal but then re-implemented it this summer, and to my knowledge haven't had any more problems. You (usually) still have to reset them after a T/O-1 takeoff tho...
I just wish the 145 had a coffee maker! :( My previous aircraft had a much simpler and easy to manage system, even though it was not automated. Not expecting icing conditions on take off? Simple, bleeds on packs on. Expecting icing conditions on the climb out? Simple, bleeds on packs on, turn on the the anti ice. It had enough thrust (more than enough) to supply the packs AND the anti ice equipment at one time. |

I fly the CRJ900 and I agree with everything you wrote. CRJ900 NextGen is a great improvement over the CRJ200 but the avionics is a generation behind. They should have installed 4 large 10.4 inch LCD panels with true moving Map. Honeywell would have ben nice. FMS buttons are a pain to use. Autothrottle should have been implemented. Cockpit is a little too tight. They should have added a 1 foot space behind the seats so we could put rollaboards behind us instead of forcing us to use the front closet. Since the control feels are artificial, I think the control harmony should be improved by lightening both the roll and aileron controls. Currently, the controls are too heavy.
Biggest drawback apart from the cockpit size is the avionics. Avionics are outdated and the autopilot is not as good as EMB 175 from people who flew both CRJ900 and EMB 175. I actually think the control feel isn't heavy enough. And it has an odd dead spot at the bottom. That was a surprise to me when I first sat in the sim. It would be nice to have a more natural, more progressive control feel. Whatever that means.... Avionics should be modernised. The weather radar stinks. Why, in this century, is there not an option of satellite weather uplink? Seriously. Don't tell me it's because of cost. Radar is ancient compared to what is possible. A factory new Cessna 182 has better weather awareness due to the Garmin satellite uplink. It is absurd that airliners are dealing with '60s technology with regards to weather. A real Next Gen airplane would have some serious improvements. The CRJ-200 could still be available. Maybe as a -300, with a better wing, leading edge devices, CG solution (not nose heavy), better ECS, etc. Give it and extra 18" of wing and another 500 lbs of thrust and you'd have a whole 'nuther airplane. This is really not an all bad airplane. Yeah, it's narrow. But if Bombardier really wanted to compete with the EMB-170 I think it could. It is already more efficient by virtue of its narrower cross section. Anyway, I don't want to fly it much longer. But for the moment it is what I fly. So I would like to see it get better. Not become a complete dinosaur. |
I don't know why your airline's procedures might be so different, but at CHQ on the E145 we always take off with the engine bleeds open and the packs on. Ice or No Ice. (for us, at least, an "ice" takeoff is JUST the engine anti-ice) Now if the packs should happen to trip because it is a "T/O" takeoff rather than an "ALT T/O-1", we reset them at 1500 feet. But our aerodata peformance printouts give us realistic max takeoff weights for takeoff with BOTH packs and engine cowl anti ice on at the same time. Basically, long story short, we never takeoff with the packs intentionally switched off... and i'm wondering why another company might do this.
