Delta crew aids stranded family at New York-JFK

"Prior to the holidays, Flight 102 from New York-JFK to Shannon,Ireland, was ready to depart when a passenger told Onboard Leader June Smith that he had lost $4,000 and passports for himself, his wife and three grandchildren. JFK Redcoat Winifred DaSilva and Gate Agent Marcia Patino helped search the gate area and nearby locations, but were unable to find the passports and had to escort the family off the plane and have their bags pulled. During the delay, Capt. Stephen Howell told the other passengers about the situation. Several joined in a search of the aircraft. When the search was unsuccessful, the passengers collected donations, and the crew presented $1,600 to the family. The JFK ramp crew was able to locate and retrieve the family's bags, and the flight left an hour and a half late. The captain was given permission to make up the time in the air, and the flight arrived 23 minutes late into Shannon. As the passengers left the plane in Shannon, one said, “I have never flown Delta before, but after witnessing what happened today, we will be back.""

Uh, because maybe no one at Delta bothered to tell the media?

Uh, or because maybe the news rarely cares about things like this. C'mon, the media drools over when something bad happens. But when a small thing like this comes up, they couldn't care less.
Just picture these 2 situations and which would be more likely to appear on CNN, NBC news, etc....
1) Family on Delta flight loses money, passports....crew and other pax help to raise money and find passports
or
2) Family on delayed JFK Delta flight stranded for days in strange city/country without money or passports after being ejected from flight

The point is, news doesn't magically appear because the News Fairy puts it there. You don't think any news organization would jump on a story like this around CHRISTMAS TIME??????

If any PR person from Delta or any of the PAX or crew called the Daily News and CNN and rejected the story, that would be different. You can't blame someone for not covering a story they didn't know about.

The money was nice, but how did they enter the country without their passports?

John Pennekamp 01-02-2008 05:54 AM

And why is this on the regional board anyhow?
