the juice: its nice your in denial but wake up. look at the future in front of you. if you want to move onto that major with your quick pic time and not get furloughed you guys have to stand up and fight for better treatment. working for colgan flying 70 seat aircraft without strong work rules and for your horrible pay is inexcusable. if your happy with that then you should be ashamed to be a pilot. some of us are actually trying to make a living while enjoying our families. this inst a hobby.

and i call complete and utter BS on dmearc's supposed pay as a first yr fo and CA . no way were you home every night and getting that much at colgan. you might have busted your ass and flown 100 hrs a month and pulled a bunch of tricks to make that much but that is far from the norm and you weren't home every night. i made 33 at express first yr and a first yr at colgan made 23 mostly because he didn't get any per diem and didnt have a strong contract. he worked about the same hours wise as me and was home practically the same as me. he was on the saab.

dmearc is also the wet dream of every pilot. what happened to him is rare and he probably knew the right people to get into CAL. CAL is known for its nepotism so i am really not suprised. congrats you got lucky or knew the right person.

if living in base is your excuse for supporting such a horrible company then you should do your homework. better companies are hiring where you can very easily commute, make more money, have the same days off at colgan even with the commute, and only extend your upgrade a couple of months. Republic is one of those companies. living in base is no excuse. i will make a blanket statement: you dont know enough about this industry if your going to work for colgan.

i am dieing to hear a better defense besides saying that i am "my airline is better then yours" mongering or i get to stay home every night. I am not saying that my airline is better but i am saying that almost every other regional is much better than colgan. Colgan is a crappy company that is bringing this industry down and our profession. Defending it is selfish or stupid depending on your motive. YOu should be ashamed at working there for those pay rates on the Q. somebody want to make a coherent defense? or just want to make personal attacks? all i am hearing are a bunch of people out for themselves at the expense of their profession.

Saab---chillax man....nothing you can do. Colgan will continue to staff their aircraft and fly their routes. They are doing routes that I'm sure you'd rather not do... their Q-400/SF-340 isn't going YYZ-IAH like your ERJ, nor is it doing a redeye from LAX-IAH.

Likewise.... some mainline guy can probably say the same for XJT. "Damn XJT flying OUR ROUTES with JETS for LESS MONEY." Its all relative bro. I know I don't like flying PHL-BWI-PHL-DCA-PIT. That is not the type of day I enjoy... I'd love if Colgan "grew" a little on those routes... we're doing it in a CRJ-200. Be thankful for what you have man.

You get paid to do a job, you're going to upgrade, and most likely move on. Most of us have the same goals---make $$$, fly a little, enjoy life. How we all get there is up to us.

Well, yeah but those are the same guys who also said "I dont want those stupid RJ's on property, Im too good to fly them"

The the fella who asked about my vacation, doesnt start until the 19th

i'll bite. why didnt he go to a major? ohhh could that be because 1000 tpic isnt everything? might want to tell that to the people who are going to be regional CA a lot longer then they are planning. their plan of 2 yrs at colgan then on to a major is a rarity and not something to plan on. there are plenty of regional captains with 1000+, 2000+, 3000+ tpic that arent getting called. thinking you can get your 1000 pic at colgan and then 1001 tpic your hired is a complete falsehood. might want to tell your applicants that before you feed them the "colgan is great" BS on here.

Here are some facts...
  • I've worked for Colgan for 2 years and 4 months.
  • My first year before taxes I made $27,422.
  • I upgraded in 13 months. My first year as Captain I made $57,298.
  • I start 757 class at Continental in February.
  • I am 24 years old.
  • I was born and raised in a Colgan base, I was home everynight with my girlfriend and I made enough money to live comfortably on.
I completely understand why ExpressJet guys are ****ed at us. But I tell you- we underbid NO ONES contract. Colgan did NOT bid for the Q400 flying, Continental said "if you want it, get the the airplanes". The only flying that we truly bid on is the TX Saab routes. United pleaded with us to take the Dulles flying, and we did a great job by getting that up and running in 50 days. The US Airways flying is AT-RISK. Which mean US Airways does NOT tell us where to fly, we have to analyze the routes ourselves and then ask them (airways) if we can fly it.

Colgan is not a bad company. It's sad when Kilo and Saab come onto a forum like this and talk bad about the company and you all take it for fact.
Funny thing...Colgan just hired a Saab street captain who was a 5 year XJT captain. He came here for the base. Colgan has some of the most skilled pilots in the industry and would run circles around a lot of the jet-jocks who criticize them.

With mainline routes being talked about. Let's talk about ExpressJet. Their branded operation is considered a MAJOR airline flying. It is considered LCC. Then why are you receiving regional pay for the flying of mainline routes and mainline operations? It's because managment has pulled the wool over your eyes and they make you think you're actually getting good pay for the flying you're doing.

Now about ExpressJet being in a bad situation, you're right. I wish you guys the best because it doesn't look the best. When is the next new hire class?

I love it, how do you know what airplane you are in yet, you have not even started at CAL yet, I am calling your bluff brotha......If you knew anything you would know you have to bid for an airplane..................

Some of the most skilled pilots ha? Like the one that did a barrel roll in the SAAB, only to kill himself by clipping power lines in a cardinal or whatever................. Be careful what you say, being skilled, and making poor decisions are two different things........... I have flown with some great pilot at Colgan, but I have flown with some Cowboys too...........(every airline as good/bad pilots)

The way they told me was, the only vacancies they had were 757. That may have changed. You can form your opinion.

I didn't say we had cowboys. I have yet to fly with any Captain or FO who doesn't have the highest regard for safety. Im talking about good decision makers, good stick and rudders, and great people that is what makes Colgan good to me.

Everyone undercuts at the regional level. AA used to fly 87 seat F100s for 150+/hr. What are current rates for 90 seat Rjs? 100/hr? Every major pilot thinks the regionals undercut. The bigger regionals think the smaller ones undercut. Welcome aboard.

That is besides the point. Why do you make an entire thread on Colgan bashing? I personally know someone who went the Colgan route, and is at SWA now. He is a couple years older than me... but he was there 2.5 years.

I just don't understand why you'd go out of your way to make a Colgan bashing thread. Something verrrrrrrrrry bad must've happened to you at that place. Feel free to tell us all Saab, we're all here for you... then put it behind you and never talk about it again....hopefully this form of therapy would make it so we don't have to read your monthly Colgan bashing thread.

Great!! Then we can look forward to you devoting 100% of your life while your off to this forum!

We don't have the unity to stand up to those Q400 payrates. It's as simple as that. We hire people who are here for a quick upgrade, any way they can get it. If half of us say no to the Q the others will gladly step in. Then 3 years form now when they are at CAL and they finally understand that even the Colgan pay rate has an effect on mainline payrates they might understand albeit too late.

Congratulations. You earned all that on the backs of your fellow pilots. You must feel proud. You will feel right at home with some of those old timers at CAL.

Colgan needs to vote in a union. That Q pay is horrific.
If Colgan does not vote in a union next time around, they are right on my list with Gojet and behind, yes behind Mesa.

That's pretty funny. Ask any mainline pilot what is ruining the profession and they will tell you that RJs have ruined it, not turboprops. For every two or three RJs there used to be a DC-9 or a 737. Most of the mainline guys were turboprop pilots. That's probably why when I jumpseat on USAirways, that treat me great when they learn i fly a Saab, like they did back in the day. USAirways captains from the airport I learned at advised me from the beginning to not to become "one of those RJ pukes." About the union, it seems that United and Usairways pilots are trying to get rid of ALPA because they suck. As for your comment about our union vote and you putting us on the list behind MESA, last time I checked MESA is ALPA, and Mesa sucks. These things lead me to conclude that ALPA sucks. DMEarc is a Saab captain and has nothing to do with the Q400, so why can't you be happy for him? I don't think his 40 minute Saab legs are taking away any of your flying. Maybe if you make up and be nice to him, he will write you a letter of recommendation when you are qualified to apply to Continental in another 8 years.
