Do you fly your RJ like this (best video segment ever)

I just happened to catch a classic 80s movie on the tube yesterday. Although it was voted to have the most improbably movie plot of all time (yes, that means Star Trek/Star Wars has a better chance of coming true) Iron Eagle has some great flying scenes, in particular the race between the C-150 and the motorcycle.

But now to the point of this thread:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nrq31J6RbgU
This is probably some of the gutsiest flying out there on film. Piloted by Art Scholl (who died shortly thereafter in an airplane crash filming the spin sequence in Top Gun). There's nothing like a C-150 with full flaps flying 5 feet off the ground with a motorcycle under its wing. The best part is 4:00 into the clip where the two meet (perfect choreography). The awesome sound track (which is very hard to find) just adds to the excitement. I get goosebumps everytime watching this race.

believe it or not..I love this movie. It is incredibly cheesy, but as a kid growing up it rocked. This flying scene is sweet..no video editing crap that they would do today!

cessna157 01-14-2008 06:23 PM

Nope, this was all real flying. No models, no CGI, no animation. Just mad stick and rudder skills. A great movie.

Iron Eagle II wasn't too bad, but they progressively got worse as time went on. Definitely good to watch for us airplane geeks.

BoilerWings 01-14-2008 07:27 PM

I know I'm gonna catch a lot of flack for saying this, but I've never seen that movie! I'm going to remedy that little situation this weekend...

Did they seriously roll that traumahawk? I'm very impressed with those stick and rudder skills.

CptRyn 01-14-2008 07:41 PM

I've never seen it either and it was on yesterday!

Outlaw2097 01-14-2008 07:49 PM

id like to see just one movie without david clarks...

wordfromthewise 01-14-2008 08:53 PM

meeko031 01-14-2008 11:34 PM

Air America has some non-DC headsets in it. :)

If I'm not mistaken, he was flying for the flat spin sequence in Top Gun. With a camera mounted on the tail of his airplane. Flat spin +aft CG enhanced by movie cameera on the tail.. basically he ended up in an airplane that flat spun exceptionally well, but it didn't want to recover a bit.

from http://www.check-six.com/lib/Famous_Missing/Scholl.htm: After successfully completing an upward spin in his aircraft, Scholl attempted an inverted flat spin. While descending rapidly in the spin, and at an altitude of 3,000 feet, he uttered, "I've got a problem." Shortly later,, at an altitude of 1,500 feet, he spoke his last known words... "I've really got a problem." Rescue planes recovered only some floating debris, and it was speculated that the aircraft sank to a depth of over 900 feet.

The exact cause of the fatal crash remains unknown, as neither the plane, nor Scholl's body, was ever recovered.

As to the flicks, are pilots that started flying pre Top Gun (Hollywood’s) more cool?

usmc-sgt 01-15-2008 04:04 AM

He would have been faster if he tried racing without his flaps down

C172MQI 01-15-2008 07:54 AM

Pretty terrible landing after all of that good flying...Must have let his instructor have the landing.

ToiletDuck 01-15-2008 02:18 PM

Ahh yes. THE RACE! Ever notice how crazy the background is going or the fact that when they are neck and neck he has his flaps down. The the guy on the bike cheats and takes a cut yet the plane can't go XC. High school kids, planes, girl friends at the finish line. Ahhh old times.

You can tell how old this movie is. When I learned our kneeboards had slots for CD players which have now been replaced for ipods.

JetJock16 01-15-2008 02:32 PM

Nothing like a bunch of generation "X"ers on a forum. Wait that includes me!

Iron Eagle ROCKED when I was younger. It was my favorite movie for many years but kind of cheesy now days. Although I must admit I still own the sound track.

MAG, RAH and 9E should add a little “Iron Eagle (Twisted Sister)” to their negotiation efforts:

“We're not going to take it,”
“We're not going to take it,”
“We're not going to take it anymore!”

cfii2007 01-15-2008 02:43 PM

I love the oil pressure gauge on the instrument panel....looks nothing like Cessna.

And why the hell is he trying to race with, what looks like, full flaps?

ExperimentalAB 01-15-2008 04:26 PM

Naw I only fly like that on my days off :D

withthatsaid182 01-15-2008 05:34 PM

now i m tempted to go try that in a tomahawk...i've had students do similar ...not hard to do in that thing...that's why they're so fun.

I tried rolling a plane once...probably wasn't a good idea - it was way too draggy and wouldn't complete the turn, which ended in an inverted nose-dive at 800 ft LoL.

Flatspin7 01-15-2008 05:47 PM

I stilly fly with my Ipod velcro'd to my kneeboard... It lets me rock out!

ATlineholder 01-15-2008 09:34 PM

huh???

Dumbest movie clip I've ever seen in my life. What are you guys, a bunch of ten year olds?

Just end every negotiation session the way that clip ends. That should speed things up.

Scooter2525 01-15-2008 10:31 PM

I loved this movie when I was 10!

Saw it again (at 24) and it was pretty cheesy, but it did take me back to our family's edited version, because my parents were afraid of too many cuss words in there... LOL

Radial Song 01-16-2008 06:22 AM

There are some nice flying scenes in Capricorn One; Stearman/ some helo chase. Again, the movie itself is cheesey but, great eye candy.

Also, check out Bat 21. I don't know if there was a military version of the Cessna Skymaster but, cool scenes nonetheless.

There was...use in 'Nam, I believe - and it was badazz! Even had some guns, if I remember correctly!

cessna157 01-16-2008 06:58 AM

Haha, a Cessna with guns. That just sounds funny. Flying around in my 150..... "He's too close for missiles, I'm switching to guns"

WeaselBoy 01-16-2008 09:33 AM

Didn't a couple of AF Academy students kill themselves several years ago trying to do the valley scene?

Doug Masters 01-16-2008 05:27 PM

"And you can deal with me...Doug Masters!"

tsween 01-16-2008 08:23 PM

saw it two days ago on a 18 hour overlay!!!

a very cheesy movie

got to love how he cant outrun a dirt bike. someone should have told him it will fly faster with the flaps up

ExperimentalAB 01-16-2008 09:50 PM

Nice to see you again, Elvis...you should come around more often!
