Colgan Training Contract
Does Colgan Air still have a training contract?
|
yep, pretty sure anyway
|
If they have none then they'd have no pilots.
|
yeah they do its a one year contract worth 16k
|
to elaborate
one year contract worth 16 thousand effective your date of hire (first day of indoc) and is prorated so leave after 6 months owe 8 thousand, leave after 11 months owe $1333.33. You get the idea |
Speaking of colgan training...do they have some agreement with Flightsaftey? I have heard that they will send you to HOU's flightsaftey for about a week to become more familiar with the SF3 and have a better knowledge before the interview and a better understating for training if you pass the interview. I guess its to help reduce the fail rate. Anyone heard of this?

It is the Colgan pilot development program and is specifically for low time candidates, not just a free sim ride for those who are nervous about the interview. Here is an excerpt from an email
"Because of the current pilot shortage in the regional airline industry Colgan Air has been challenged with keeping our recruiting and hiring standards high while faced with a pool of lower time candidates. In response to this challenge we have developed the Pilot Development Program. Candidates that do not meet our posted minimums would be eligible for this program, at the company's discretion. All candidates will go through our regular interview process, including a full motion simulator evaluation, to determine suitability. The week-long program will be held at Flight Safety at Hobby in Houston and will include four days of ground school and three days of simulator observation and instruction. The curriculum for the ground school was developed based on the deficiencies that we have seen with new hires in our Saab first officer training over the last year. The primary focus will be an instrument refresher course in a multi-crew environment. The ground school will also include CRM, Situational Awareness, Colgan Air Procedures and Policies, and an overview of Systems and turbine engines. The simulator portion of the training will include a total of 12 hours of observation of our new hires in the SAAB sim and 6 hours of instruction in the King Air C90 simulator. An offer of employment with Colgan Air as a First Officer training candidate will be contingent upon a successful check ride by a check airman after completion of this program. Because this is a pre-hire program, candidates that do not successfully complete the program will not be faced with a failed training on their permanent record. Colgan Air will subsidize the cost of all expenses associated with this program however candidates will be responsible for their hotel rooms, meals and personal expenses. They will be eligible for Colgan Air's reduced rate at the Spring Hill Suites. If you know of anyone who would be a good candidate for this program, please feel free to email me their resume at [email protected]. As always, thank you so much for your support." |

Kind of SAD, basically they are telling people that they are that desperate that they really don't care how much time you have.................. The training contract is about as worthless as their management. I have said it before, verified through my Employment Lawyer sis, that it is not worth the paper it is written on because it is not enforceable.......... |

Care to elaborate? Why is it not enforceable? A contract between two willing parties can certainly be enforceable unless they wrote it to make it difficult for themselves to enforce. What gives? Thanks.
(Just like the time I had a friendly chat with a someone at Colgan I said "look I have no problem doing a 121 flight after 3 hrs of sleep in a Hanger in 3 degree MHT, let me just CALL the FEDs and make sure I am legal for it"--Funny how that conversation quickly turned around.................... Don't let anyone at any airline push you around, if you are tired or sick YOU CAN NOT BE REPRIMANDED FOR IT, IT IS ILLEGAL TO FLY SICK & TIRED |

I'd like to know if its possible to have a Colgan thread WITHOUT Saab giving his 2 cents? We all know how he feels, but some people would still like to get some accurate information. As for the contract, the only good answer is to consult a lawyer. That's just MY 2 cents.

99.9% of those that are at COLGAN have never been anywhere else so when they say Colgan is good, well what do they have to compare it to? Yes there are guys that go from Colgan to CAL and all the other "Major" airlines, but it had more to do with who they knew then the 1,000's of hours of PIC time they had, believe me I talk to guys with a lot, and I mean a lot of TURBO-PROP & TURBO-JET time that can't get an interview |

The training contract is about as worthless as their management. I have said it before, verified through my Employment Lawyer sis, that it is not worth the paper it is written on because it is not enforceable.......... Fact: Colgan does not pay very well. As a result, yes, they have to work harder to get pilots. To get pilots, they have two choices: (1) hire a zillion people and let half of them fail (and walk away with a failed checkride on record) or (2) bring in some folks that are low time and give them an introduction to 121 training and some time in the sims and see how they do. If the work out, fine; if not, no harm, no foul, and NO busted checkride on record. This is no better or worse than the companies that have lower minimums for people that go through the jet transition training. Good for the industry? I don't know. Better for the potential new hire? Heck YES! He doesn't have to shell out a bunch of money and has no risk of a failure. RE: the validity of the training contract... Yes, one can get out of nearly any contract if he/she is willing to out lawyer/spend the opposition. Saab, it says something about your character to hear you telling everybody how they can screw a potential employer. Would I break a training contract? No. If the dream job came along tomorrow, I would take it AND repay the remaining balance on the contract.... Because I don't want to be an immoral jerk. |

Lets face it, most of you don't really care how bad you have it, because what does it matter, you'll upgrade in a year and be at CAL in no time:rolleyes: |
I think that program is a good idea their going to be hiring low time pilots anyway like all the other regionals so whynot give them some extra training to make sure they are airline material

You want to talk about Character & morals?????????????? Very moral of them to take us to hotels 1.5 hrs away from LGA to save a buck. (you think 8hrs is enough rest in that case?) Very moral of them to threaten to fire me because I would not accept an illegal trip. Very, very moral of them to short me pay as well They were very moral when it came to Lou C as well, you remember that one? The list goes on and on and on............ If they had treated me with dignity and respect and treated me like a human being rather then a slave, maybe I would have showed them some respect in return. I gave them two weeks and I am still waiting for my last pay check......... |

And like bootcamp and the military, it ain't easy or sexy. But for some of us, it works. We do our time and move on. So please quit telling us how we have signed ourselves up for indentured servitude and that the Messiah is elsewhere. And I still question your character. |

:CLOSED:
Another Colgan thread down the drain. Lets try to keep these on topic, a question was asked about Colgans training contract and that question was answered so there is no more need for this thread. No need to have ANOTHER 6 page thread on why saab hates CJC. |
