Public blind about the industry
http://www.gadling.com/2008/01/30/pi...rgency-landing
Im specifically talking about the comments made to this news report. It appears that I no longer know how much I make, we all cheat on our wives, love to stalk people and drink while we fly everyday. Crap! My IV pumping alcohol to my system popped out! Later |
Unfortunately, I really don't think there is much we can do to educate the general public about our industry...it is far too complex. John Smith will forever remain ignorant to the crazy workings of the Airlines.
At least it's nice to see that, for the most part, we are still highly respected professionals. The draw-back? We are held to impossibly high (almost deity-like) ethical, moral, health, etc...standards LoL |

Oh, that comment was so full of lies. No airline pilot only make twenty thousand a year. You must be an airline steward who hasn't taken your medication today. Ha ha ha...take your medication and get back on planet earth.

This was said after someone said they were a pilot and made $20k a year and had $150k debt from school.

My solution, have a TV show that follows a regional airline pilot on a 4 day trip, with lots of interviews from pilots on what we actually do. The "boob tube" is the solution. Cheers. |
that would be a very boring tv show to watch. it would be like watching soccer.

Cargo, here I come. :D |

Ok now that I think about it, it probably would be a boring TV show. It would probably be more appropriate for 60 min. or some other show to do a investigation and interview a bunch of pilots. Won't happen though because there are much worse things happening in our world that probably deserve more attention. |
Bottom line, the general public are some ignorant souls that live for the best news/rumors and would swear that they know exactly what they are talking about. They do know what they are talking about but it's not a reality, it's in their fantasy land somewhere between their ears. It's one thing to inquire about learning more on the subject, but another to just ASSume. I think Jackie Chan said it best "I never said I didn't know english, I just let you talk that way I can see just how full of **** you are" (or something remotely close to that. Rush Hour):D

I would like to see someone like Mike Wallace or maybe even Andy Rooney do a piece on the reality of the airline pilots' lifestyle. Ok, so maybe Andy Rooney is too crotchety, but he used to write for the Stars and Stripes back in World War 2 and spent a lot of time with the 8th Air Force and he had a deep respect for those pilots. So hopefully he would do a good job. I could see John Stossel possibly doing it on 20/20 in his "Give Me a Break" section. Who's in charge of PR at ALPA? They should start looking into more creative ways of spreading their message. |
They should make a show about airline training and ground schools. Preferably airlines that hire low timers, that would never be boring. It would probably keep the flying public off regional airlines though.
|
the training show would have great reviews....."oh, i hope joey makes it, oh no, he redscreened again" And imagine the publics face when they look in the cockpit and see joey there, flying for the "other" airline he was hired @ after busting out of the first one.
Honestly, boring TV. The lifestyle isn't glamorous, the destinations aren't exotic, you're initially paid pennies, but it's nice to think the public still has a bit of respect for you, if they didn't, would they get out of the way as you're walking in your flying V down the terminal? except for that random clueless dude with a carry on the size of atlanta who's yapping away on his earpiece while doing circles in the middle of the aisle looking for his gate number.... |

Hey, and enjoy this little gem. Apparently ABC News thinks the public ought to stay away from you regional guys anyway because your "low time" and inexperience is gonna kill 'em. Luckily there was at least a little counter-point.

Especially because when people get up and walk around the cabin with the seat belt sign on I can manipulate the control to simulate moderate turbulence without getting caught. |
