Comair / ASA
Thinking about making a move to either one?
Which one has "better" qualities? Bases isnt a problem since I live in Miami. I dont quite meet the mins for Comair but I do have 121 SIC experience, any chance they might lower them for the experience? If not ASA will do but regardless gotta compare the two....any feedback is good. Thanks AFX Armed |

Put your app in, they have hired with 250 total. He is an All ATP graduate and has done very well. CVG Base may be difficult having to commute through atl.
|
No I got the ASA mins but not the 600 that comair wants, and I havent done the ATP written.
currently at 515ish. |
You are probably fine at Comair, I got hired with 580 TT and 58 multi...all cfi, no 121 time.... I like it a lot here, life has gotten a lot better with a little senority

Whats the downside at Comair, I knew some stuff with upgrade was going around but anything to add? I would prefer Comair since I got family in the JFK area so the reserve issue wont be a problem, I wanted to know if the -200 guys cross fly the planes or whoever is on the -200 only -200/100 and 700/900 or all mixed?

Whats the chance of landing either?
Which flying is better? I know the 7/9 got the better cockpits and whatnot but I mean sched wise and the like.....I got a good buddy of mine who was a CFI in Comair outta JFK but I havent been able to contact him to see whats going on out there. |
stay aways from comair...My good buddy is about to make a year in comair and he has only flown about 260 hours in the CRJ! he wants to jump ship but he think about the second year pay. he based out of JFK and still doesn't have a line yet.

Read the 'big' Comair thread, you'll find a lot of information. It's like a freakin' book:D |

Glad I got out of JFK in Sept, based there a month and flew a 4 day worth 4:57, since Oct 1 in cvg, over 330 hours, must be the base.
|
So, if you had to make a choice, out of the two, would you say Comair or ASA? I think ASA is all out of ATL, which I would think is better than JFK, not sure about CVG.
|
Never worked for ASA cannot make an informed opinion.

:DGuys, we need more people at Comair. The more people below us the better for us. Go to Comair dude, it's great here.:D
|
Go wherever you will get the better QOL................and only YOU can make that decision.

If you can live in base (jfk) then go to a place you can live in base......... comair is not that bad.....ecspec if you can live in base....otherwse enjoy commuting to atl
|
ASA is likely your best bet. HOWEVER, most new hires are going to the CRJ700 where the reserve will run you at least 1 year. The CRJ200 will give you better QOL if you are senior enough in you class to get it. If so, expect to be on reserve for 2-3 months. After that, you will rack up about 80 hours of block time per month. You will probably have an easier commute from MIA to ATL. Good luck!

Is Comair sticking to their ATP written requirement or are they hiring people without it?

They say it is required and you have to have it before you start ground school. I never got asked for it. Nobody every looked at it or made a copy of it.
They looked at and made a copy of mine at the interview. I have no idea what happens with it next. As far as ASA or Comair, realize this, many people think the regionals are just a stepping stone to something better. And for many people that has held true, but the way things are going, you should also look at the "what if" I'm here for a very long time. Also....if you plan to try and move on to Big D....it will be much more difficult coming from Comair...... |

I know some have been hired but ASA has about a 10:1 ratio. Both companies seem to be losing just as many pilots per month. Just something to consider if DL is the ultimate dream for the origninal poster. |

Don't forget they cancelled the last prelimnary awards and we don't know when they will be upgrading again. isn't industry wide stagnation awesome! |
That is correct , I am in my 9th month here at ASA , on the 200 , and I am still about 40 numbers from holding a line, onn reserve , i only flew 42 hours last month, and that is on short call....all aircraft esp. with the ATRs leaving, will be about a year on reserve as it stands now, however it could change fast and be shorter, when i first started it was 1-2 mo. rsv on the 200 , and now its like a 10-12mo rsv. I I have had a good experience here at ASA thus far, and i commute (from BOS) , I have friends at Comair who ve been there 3+ years and now upgrade in sight, they are looking to go elsewhere currently, but do whatever makes you have the best QOL. I do know that they South Florida commute to ATL can be VERY tough. good luck in your decision!
