Future Successful CRJ regionals

Hello all, just curious, what do you think will be the future of top CRJ regional airlines? As of now it seems that most regionals are slowing hiring quite considerably and I am right around 450 hours looking to sneak in before this hiring boom slows even more... PSA and ASA are my best bets so far... I'd loooove to commute from Charlotte what would be some other good options?

Thanks for all the help and tips

and no flamers

Must agree with Shaun.... ASA has basically stopped hiring.... as I understand it so I may be wrong.... and PSA is hiring..... although out of the 17 that interviewed the same day I did I know of only four who were hired.... all in excess of 700 hours and all but one had turbine experience.... I am not trying to be a downer... go for it but be ready for the worst.

Eagle can't hire enough people. I'd also suggest looking at Air Wisconsin if you want Charlotte.

That's a good move, but for AWAC not having a CLT base he'd have to try for a commute to ORF but he'd likely get stuck with a commute to RDU (may not be that bad) or more likely, LGA.

labbats 03-16-2008 05:12 AM

whoops. I thought they had a CLT base.

saab2000 03-16-2008 05:13 AM

PSA has a CLT base. AWAC has ORF, DCA and PHL. We will have RDU and LGA soon. But everything is moving and trying to hit a moving target is never easy.

I actually think AWAC is poised to be a player for a while. Among other things, they are not up to their eyeballs in debt.

saab2000 03-16-2008 05:15 AM

BTW, the commute to any of the current or future AWAC bases would probably not be that tough. There are a lot of flights on all those routes and RDU would be drivable.

I don't care where you are or what you're doing, 2008 is going to be a bad year to be at the bottom of ANYONE'S seniority list. Whether its a major/legacy/national carrier or 50 seat regional carrier, 2008 is not going to be pretty, IMHO. If I were you, I'd stick it out with a good instructing gig and wait to surf in on the next wave. You'll probably make more money and enjoy a better life style than you will clinging to the bottom of a seniority list on reserve.

I wouldn't have been in such a rush to get out of ATP had they been paying me 2000/mo after rent! I was pulling in a whole 800...ouch! Ya'll got it too easy ;)

de727ups 03-16-2008 11:48 AM

"what are some good freight places? anything in washington state?"

You'll need 1200 total for PIC 135 freight. SIC 121 freight in WA? About the only one I can think of is Empire out of Coeur D Alene, ID. I don't think they hire low timers, either.

Doesn't Ameriflight do some flying out of WA? Like Seattle area? If I remember correctly, they have a right seat program if you're close on times. I don't think 450TT is close enough but it doesn't hurt to check into it. Other option might be some VFR stuff like traffic watch, pipeline patrol, fish spotting, fire spotting, etc.

Not sure what your hurry is. $2000/month flying twins (all PIC btw) and $2000/month flying RJs (all SIC) spends the same, doesn't it?

rickB 03-16-2008 12:41 PM

ya ive heard of ameriflight but like 727 said i am nowhere near their minimums... ahhhh washington i wish their were more jobs out there i love the mountains lol, i dont mind instructing though its fun.. i just want to travel baaad !!

Pilotpip 03-16-2008 01:06 PM

I wouldn't call riding the shuttle to the Holiday Inn in the dark after a long day, then riding the shuttle back to the airport the next morning before the sun comes up "traveling".

rickB 03-16-2008 01:20 PM

but the benefits getting to hop on flights and travel around on days off isnt too shabby... dont be a party pooper!

Hate to break it to you but you get pooped on a lot at this party we call the regionals.

After a month or two of jumpseating and non-revving you won't really want to see an airplane on your days off.

soon2bfo 03-16-2008 02:47 PM

Don't commute.

You will when you know it's gonna get you to Vail, Park City, or Killington, god I wish the winter never ended.

Just hit the slopes out West for the first time this past week...And my second-run down the mountain some little girl slams into me and I end up cracking a damn rib. And then I have to work a 4-day the next day!! ::shakes fist:: Makes a guy feel real manly LoL

Stay off the bunny slopes and you wont have to worry about the little girls skiing into you.

j3gibbon 03-18-2008 02:27 PM

Gojet just hired a street cap from NC and he is commuting to ORD. But I would suggest somewhere closer and easier to commute (ORDs winters are terrible).

I expect the aging CRJ200 fleet will turn into a freight dawg after receiving single-pilot authorization for 135 cargo ops.

Oh she moved alright - did about two head-over-foot somersaults on her way!

Aeroflight is reputed to be hiring ut of BFI.

If you're going to ski in Vermont, goto a real ski mountain instead of an expensive touristy one with shiny magazine ads.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay_Peak_Resort

best glades and off trail skiing in Vermont. 8 lifts and a tram. Cheap tickets too. The facilities aren't that fancy but its so far north the mass-holes and other pesky flatlanders stay away.

I live there so while you might consider this biased info, I consider it local knowledge.
