Commuting
 

I have heard from everyone that commuting sucks. Has anyone ever done the commute from EWR to IAH. Any suggestions pertaining to how hard this will be, and also if I have to two leg it which i probably will what are the best routes from your experiences. Thanks

It can be tough just given that CAL and XJT send a lot of deadhead crews between the two. That being said, sometimes the flights are packed (especially if weather is bad in IAH or EWR) and sometimes they are wide open (like 100 seats open on a 757). It's like any commute I guess in that it varies and can be unpredictable. Just don't be surprised if CAL's operation goes pear shaped and you suddenly see your self bumped down the list by 20 or so deadheads.

why would you have to "two leg it"? CO has a bunch of non-stops, and one of them is a 777 flight.

As far as "commuting sucks", it does. For me 2 years was enough, never again. If you drive, its not big deal because you're in control, but if you have to flight, makes life miserable.

Ya i agree but its definentally a little ways to drive. and the reason i was told i may have to two leg it is for the same reason that the first reply said which was because of all the CAL guys commuting back home and ill get bumped. And funny you said that about the 777 because i saw that flight also and thought the same thing theres no way they can fill that up is there..

DAL is an option out of IAH to ATL and then on to EWR. The 2-leg version of your commute would give you more options, but eat up more time. Commuting in general sucks...and CAL isn't exactly known for flying planes empty. Just from a regional standpoint, the heaviest loads I see are on the CAL side. Everytime I take a look at loads for my commute, CAL is at the end of the list just because I know they'll probably be full. It got to the point that when I commute outta Houston, I don't even look at IAH anymore; I go straight to HOU (which won't help you too much). Good Luck.

Thanks that def does help. I work for cal though so i can check there loads on the internet. how is it that you check the loads on other carriers to see what your chances are?

I worked as an intern for CO for a while and we couldn't jumpseat so I got pretty handy on different routes. Communting from IAH to EWR has alot of options. If you have to two-leg it, when going from IAH to EWR, DCA can be a good connection. Out of IAH there were about 5 or 6 fights but once you get to DCA, there are flights just about every hour. Going in the other direction, MSY and DFW are good choices. Same as DCA, flights just about every hour to IAH. I found non-reving between hubs on CO was the hardest just because many crews and non-revers travel. Good Luck!

Why would you consider commuting from EWR to IAH??? I assume you're with XJT or CAL, both of whom have a base in EWR. Living in base is sooo mush better than commuting. Commuting sucks any way you slice it, and EWR-IAH is probably one the worst you could attempt. Like the above poster said, occasionally a flight is open, but 90% of the time those flights are packed. Just get yourself based in Newark. Many people are always trying to get out of Newark so it should not be a problem.

I think he lives in IAH and is flying for Colgan out of EWR.
