ATL based folks- how's life?

My future wife and I are thinking about moving to ATL since my company has a base there and the job market is prime for what she does. We both live in MEM/are from MEM/families are both in MEM. We want OUT for at least a few years. I am concerned about delays and where some good places are outside ATL. We will be buying a house if we move but I will be on the lower end of the CA list so I am concerned with getting to work with a 90 min callout.

How is ATL from the pilot's perspective?

I live on the south end of town and love it here. Takes me 25-30 minutes to drive to the employee lot. Very little traffic, schools are pretty good, and plenty of shopping locations. If you want more specifics, just shoot me a PM (Jetcareers would be better, since I check that one more often).

I live in Buckhead (pretty pricey if you want to buy a house) which is just to the north of the city. I take the train to work since it's faster than driving to the lot and getting on the shuttle. I give myself 1hr15min and I'm usually 20 minutes early. The south side of town (Newnan) is pretty popular for married types. It's about 20-30 minutes from the airport. Not sure how the night life is there if you are concerned about that. If you do a google search on places to live in atlanta, you can get a real good idea of where NOT to live. You can PM me also.

Yeah, partayy!!! I don't live "IN" buckhead I live "kind of in" buckhead, near the 75/85 split. I live in a 2 bedroom apt. and it's 1195/mo, so I pay $600.

That's roughly half my income. Not too much left over for beer.

I too live in Vinings. I love it. I'm at the airport in 20-25 minutes no matter the time of day. I would suggest the western half of the city, whether north or south, because of lesser traffic (285 west. avoid downtown connector if you can). I pay $450 a month for a townhome with two good friends. Houses would be cheaper on the western side of the city. Plenty of nice areas. As mentioned Newnan would be affordable and Peachtree City is nice, but a little pricier. Tons of Delta and AirTran folks in PC.

I don't know how you guys can stand those areas up by the city. Too crowded for me. PTC and Newnan are much less crowded, and still only 25-30 minutes to the airport.

Thanks for the replies... I now have plenty of homework to do... My woman is already picking out houses to look at- crap...

atlmsl 03-20-2008 08:31 PM

Sounds like a good set-up to me. She picks them out, and you yay/nay them. What more could you ask for?

higney85 03-21-2008 06:11 AM

yea- it makes life easy.

I live in Vinings, near the border of Vinings and Buckhead. Apartments are nice, but if you're going to be here a while, the market's tanking and bottom is a few months out still. Might want to invest in that house your woman is looking at. Make a lowball offer. It's a buyer's market.

Peachtree City and Newnan are nice cities, but really boring. Good if you have kids and stuff. Nice conservative type towns.

Vinings, Smyrna, and the suburban part of Buckhead are a great mix of suburban and cosmopolitan. Lots of great restaurants and stuff.

Best of luck.
