ZED Pass

Hey guys.

I got hired this month, March so I am new to all this.

I was wondering, how would I go about purchasing a ZED Pass on an international airline? What would I need, and what would I need to do? Seems we have the ZED agreements with plenty of airlines, including the one I would be using. But I'm not sure how I go about acquiring a ZED pass.

Thanks for any help. :)

Alot of carriers who fly international routes require you to be with your airline 3 to 6 months before you get benefits.

Hey, thanks for quick reply.

I got hired on by a U.S Airways Express carrier. (PDT)

The airline I was thinking of taking is a Star Alliance member, as is U.S Airways. Does this make a difference? On the ZED website we have there is a small list of airlines that I can check the schedules on and list on, and all those airlines are Star Alliance airlines. Then there is another list of participating ZED Airlines, and its a long long list of all sorts of different airlines.

Is there any difference?

crewdawg52 03-22-2008 07:12 PM

Got to check out if there are any restrictions. I know with my carrier, there are. Hope for the best for ya.

flyinaway411 03-22-2008 07:14 PM

I dont think international is any different. Last week, I went right to an Airways ticket counter and told the lady I wanted to buy a ZED fare for my "domestic partner" (as my girlfriend is known to them) from ABC to XYZ. They work their magic on the computer, you pay, and they print you the ZED. Then you take it to the airline's gate your using to travel from ABC to XYZ and present it (after you listed on them). They'll take care of the rest. I don't know the req's for how long you have to be with your company.

Not to sound uneducated, but what is a ZED Pass?

stoki 03-22-2008 08:07 PM

Guardawg, a ZED pass is basically a discount airline pass for airlines employees. Depending on the mileage you are traveling, you will get a discount price for that trip in the area of around I guess 90-95% (someone correct me if I am wrong) either way it is cheap. But you are standby, so paying passengers always go before you, and before the flight leaves, if there is still an empty seat, you get it. :)

Thanks crewdawg, hopefully I am eligible.

flyinaway, I assume you have been with your airline for more then 3 or 6 months?

I wonder if that is just a guideline that is there, but nobody pays much attention to it?

Does anybody have any experiences, or tried to go on an international airlines as a new-hire?

jamin35008 03-22-2008 08:35 PM

ZED= Zonal Employee Discount and is a discount based on the number of zone miles you wish to travel and the lowest full Y fare at the time. The zones might not be right but you will get the idea. 0-499= zone 1 500-999= zone 2 1000-1499= zone 3 and so on.... the price is based on which zone you travel in.

The amount you pay, like I said before is based on the number of miles you fly and the lowest FULL Y fare at the time of puchase. Most carriers do have ZED fares, but some dont like Delta Airlines, but Comair might. Its all based on the Carrier not who they operate or fly for. You need to look up each carrier seperate for each segment you want to fly. I know for AA and MQ its a simple in RES just type N*TVLUA or N*TVLDL or N*TVLOH....you get it now N*TVL__ the airline code. Sorry its the only airline I have worked for, Im sure they is a way to look this stuff up with every carrier you will just have to find out how, but if you cant just stop by AA/MQ and ask if they have ZED's....you know the format now:D

ZED stands for Z-onal E-mpolyee D-iscount. You buy the ZED pass, the fare you pay is based on mileage "zones".

Below is an example ONLY of ZED fares;

1 1 - 450 $25
2 451 - 750 $29
3 751 - 1600 $36
4 1601 - 3200 $51
5 3201 - 4080 $58
6 4081 - 5000 $66
7 5001 - 6100 $72
8 6101 - 7100 $86
9 7101 - 9999 $97

Any travel in a certain zone cost a fixed amount. So, from 1 mile to 450 miles will cost you 25$ one way. I believe that they are subject to a service charge in some cases, but could be wrong.

I got a ZED fare from LAX to AKL a year and a half ago, the total cost was $215 round trip. I'm sure they have gone up since then.

stoki 03-22-2008 09:16 PM

So do they look at how long you have worked at your airline?

What if you list and they issue you the ticket? I assume this means everything is OK and you can go if there is a seat available?

Also, if I list with an airline, and the flight I listed for is out of JFK. Do I have to pay and pickup the ticket at the counter in JFK? Or can I go to a nearby airport with US Airways ticket counters and pick it up from there? Do I get the return ticket as well? Or is that issued later?

Sorry for all the questions, thanks! :)

Pilotpip 03-22-2008 09:37 PM

Your employee travel person will be able to answer all of this for you.

Delta is slowly going from ID90's to ZED fares. Right now on ZED you can go on Continental and Northwest. I assume the other Sky Team members are going this way too, making it alot cheaper.

i dont know if they look at the longevity at your company. after thinking about it for a while, they did look at my DOH. if they issue you the ticket, i would assume your good, but don't take my word on that. you can go to ANY USAIR ticket counter, you do not have to go to the one of the particular city you are departing out of. and you can get you return ticket there also.

I was just looking at pass travel on other airlines as well. I'm with XJT and the employee travel site seems to have some pretty good info. Looks like it depends on the agreement between carriers. Some airlines have ID90/ZED agreements that are only good for mainline and not express/codeshare carriers. Some honor domestic partners/spouses, some don't. Some honor parents, some don't. Some charge higher zone rates for parents and domestic partners/spouses. Some require 3 months service, some 6 months, some have no requirement. I guess what I'm getting at is that it depends on where you're going and who you are trying to get on and the agreements can vary a lot. If there is an employee travel office or something along those lines, they would probably be the best point of contact to help you make heads or tails of it.

International buddy passes?

Are there international discount passes for friends, not just spouse/parents? My best friend and I want to go to Australia, for instance.

This is true. One way I have found to get around Delta's ID'90s is to buy the ZED ticket on the Delta route but under a NWA or CAL code share flight number. Not sure if thats ligit but I have done it a few times.

It's pretty much like FFB said. It just depends on the airline. Not YOUR airline, the agreements YOUR airline has with the OTHER airlines. Some will allow your designated travel companion, some won't. Some will ONLY allow a "domestic partner", but no travel companion.

You have to either look at your company's agreement with the specific airline or simply ask the person in you airline's travel bureau.

Want to go to Australia with a friend and you don't work for a UEX carrier that allows a travel companion/buddy pass on UAL, or the ability to travel ID90/ZED with your friend? It's simple, you guys pool your money and buy your friend the CHEAPEST ticket you can, and YOU JS on UAL, Polar, or Atlas and meet them there.

Ok, so if I want to use Continental to go to Portugal, I don't have to buy a ZED fare correct, I can just jumpseat correct? Or because its international do I have to buy a ZED and go that way?

Well, it's been a topic of debate lately. But I'm pretty sure that CAL dropped their separate domestic/int'l JS list.

If that's the case, yes. You can jumpseat using the JS privilege. You CANNOT ride up front, you have to take an open seat in the back. You will STILL have to pay any applicable departure taxes on the return trip, regardless of how you come back. And no, I don't know how much Portugal charges.

It's always a good idea to buy a ZED as a back up, just in case. JS'ers have absolute last boarding priority, even after buddy, ID90, and ZED. It's an extreme case, but say there is 1 seat open, and you really need to get back. Another offline/non-coex JS'er shows up before you and gets the seat. You would be SOL. IF you use the ZED, you'll get the seat.

Also, ZED's are refundable.
