Again, you've never done it, so its tough to imagine. I too, flight instructed, and recently signed back up with a flight school to stay current after the airlines. I loved flight instructing, disliked the airlines.

Flying a 172 with no autopilot down low, with varying students, in different levels of training, etc is cool. It makes you think to sit there and explain some element of the curriculum to a student. Once you are through training in the airlines (which is difficult), you won't think about flying again until your next recurrent. Its just a program you run every flight. It goes something like this: PF: Set thrust, gear up, flaps up, climb power, 10,000 feet, 29.92's, direct XXX, 1,000 to go, 100 to go, cruise power, cross XXX at FL240, brief landing, in range check, flaps 9, flaps 22, gear down, yaw damper off, land. or PNF: Cleared to go, contact dep, climb to 15,000, climb to FL230, contact the next guy, the next guy, the next guy, the next guy, the next guy, the next guy, the next guy, descend to FL190, cross XXX at 11,000 at 250knots, contact approach, "we've got Juliet", turn here, turn there, contact tower, cleared to land. Done! Just repeat a few thousand times and enjoy the hotels. Or how about this life... Get up, get shower, brush teeth, get dressed, TRY to eat breakfast, sit in traffic, walk to train, sit on train, walk to work, get to work, get coffee, sit down in cubicle, sit down in cubicle, sit down in cubicle... wait you are still sitting down in the cubicle. listen to the gossip/politics goin on around you.. hear about how your job can be outsourced to India if they wanted to, deal with the co worker that doesn't do any work and pawns it off on you, and makes more money than you... deal with the CEO's kid or relative that is dumber than a brick despite his fully paid for education, watch them move up around you to higher positions because of their last name, while you remain the same, and sit in the cubicle... wait that 23 year old got a corner office now? Yup you are still in the cubicle. Time to go home yet? finally. walk to train, sit on train, walk to car, sit in traffic, walk to house, sit down fighting the urge to pass out... argue with the wife b/c you are ****y and miserable from the day… go to bed, get up, repeat. 5 days a week every week. Only 1 - 4 day weekend per year (thanks giving). 99% of the rest of the time, its 5 on, 2 off. Oh, don't let me forget about the select favorites that get work from home privileges, when you don't or wont... Despite the fact that you BUILT THE FKN VPN. |

This industry can be tough, no doubt. But it's not all bad Johnny Raincloud. You're right. There are guys flying 737s around making $60K a year. But, they're 1st year Southwest FOs that will make well over $90K the next year. DAL has 1st year guys on the 767ER who are making $50 bucks an hour. When they hit 2nd year pay, they'll be making over $85 bucks an hour. 2nd year A320 FOs will make $75+ an hour, and the 737 drivers will make a little more. Some of the reserve guys who commute can sit at home most of the month because of long call. Everyone is long call, but can be converted to short call 6 times a month.
There are a few of the bright sides to the industry. I won't get into the uglys, as many on here are already familar. This industry can be tough, but also rewarding. It all depends on the indvidual, and their life. Think long and hard before leaving. The grass is ALWAYS greener on the other side. He is going to start flight training, that will cost 40-50K, I'd use that money for an MBA or your kids college fund. |

Compare that with 144 hours on and 30 hours off as an airine pilot? Notice I took some time off on on the off hour. That is because you will probably commute and that will take off AT LEAST 12 hours off of your off time. And this is a senioir guy. If you don't have much senioirty, you might get tuesday and wendsay off, when it would do you no good. Please.... enjoy your job, nothing to see here.. If you're in it for the coolnese, go rent a 172 at the local ap, same sensations without the BS. |
OK, here is the analogy as relates airline flying:

Not all of us will be Delta FOs anytime soon, which even then pay is not nearly enough. You can make 50-85k per year easily on other professions especially if you have a degree.

Seems to me the miserable ones should get out of flying and go find another job....

But there are very few professions, let alone jobs where you will make $50-$85K 1st and 2nd year. If you believe that you may want to give yourself a reality check. |
I strongly doubt the nay sayers ever worked in an office job before... 5 day work weeks plain suck. The negative people fail to count the time for commuting / overtime / whatever as well when making numbers up for a 9 to 5er... I don't see how you say that you only get 30 hours off per week either... Here is the schedule of a regional FO I know thats only been working at the airline for less than 1 year...

I honestly think (like the other guy said) that the people that whine never worked in a real job (aside from aviation) before... |
