Skywest offers LOAs

Heard a rumor that skywest is offering LOAs for the month of June. Anyone know of this first hand?

No they have not. We are currently staffed properly for the amount of flying we have.

seanthornton 05-03-2008 09:10 AM

It's true that they are for MAY for certain domiciles, not sure about June yet.

I know they have for FA's but I haven't seen any request for pilots.

viper548 05-03-2008 09:17 AM

DEN, ORD and SLC pilots were offered time off with OR without pay for the month of May.
Not a big deal, they have a little extra staffing and are allowing people to take time off if they want it

seanthornton 05-03-2008 09:18 AM

Voila---I got the whole month of May off (unpaid)..

Group Message: DEN / SLC / ORD RJ CA and FO:

Crew Support would like to offer to those looking for some extra time off in May, time off with or without pay. All requests will be submitted as a normal request through skywestonline.com / crew member / time off / request form. Make certain that when requesting for this limited time offer time off without pay you add comments to your request before submission. All prior requests will not be adjusted. All requests are going to be awarded first come / first serve.

Slaphappy 05-03-2008 09:26 AM

They are still running Emb newhire and upgrade classes every month.

That's a pretty big assumption to say that Skywest will never be in a situation to have to offer LOAs.

Roper92 05-03-2008 10:00 AM

I'm going to make an even bigger assumption and say that Jet Jock's favorite flavor of Kool-Aid is Watermelon.

andy171773 05-03-2008 10:07 AM

Skywest will never lose money, ever..they're the most stable airline ever made, ever..they will never furlough, ever.... management will never screw them, ever.

......:(

Really, I said "never?" Seems like you are the one who’s assuming.

As for the above pilots, I am not domiciled in any of those above locations. I have never heard of anyone nor have I ever been asked to take time off without pay. I have never seen an email (I check my emails 3-4 times a day) nor have I ever heard anyone on line mention it. Yes I just complete upgrade training and I haven't been flying the line but I have been around SLC a lot lately and they will continue to run EMB new hire and upgrade classes each month.

Grow up and stop being typical APC flamers.

Regardless, I can say without a doubt that I'm happy to be where I am and I'm pleased with our Mgmnt team. Call it "Kool-Aid" drinking (sure why not, Fruit Punch personally), call it whatever you will, the fact still remains that SKW is positioned very well for the future and should have no problem weathering the current storm. But after seeing my father, after 32 years of service as a pilot, weather Braniffs fall; I fully understand that what's up today can fall tomorrow.

Still over staffed on the Jet and yet for the month of May we have min reserve coverage for FO's on the EMB. I don't know how many people there putting in new hire Bro classes each month but its not even close to being enough.

Call it flaming all you want, that's how A LOT of the SKW posters on this website sound, that nothing can ever touch your airline. Ya'll get so defensive when the slightest bit of bad news/tidings/rumors come Skywest's way. The bad of the regional sandbox isn't just "everyone else's problem" , maybe sometimes it takes a kick in the APU exhaust pipe to get some people to realize this.

I see you edited your post jetjock, i think you may understand where i'm coming from then.

My postings were edited for the main reason that, although I have not heard of LOA's being offered here at SKW, others have. We are currently well staffed for the summer season (overstaffed for off peak) on the RJ and understaffed on the EMB.

I stand by my position and I feel that I have explained myself adequately above and for the record I did not say “never” or “ever.”

Good day.

tpersuit 05-03-2008 02:07 PM

I find this funny that Skywest gets a LOA or COLA and you act somewhat defensive even though you have no need to. It's really not that big of a deal. It's actually a good thing in my eyes, because guys have the chance to do other things for a month or more.

When XJT offered COLA's for May, June, and July for 1-3 month periods, I had to come on here and explain it was just a cost cutting measure and furloughs weren't in the works. Of course people kept saying XJT was going under and going to furlough even though I tried to say we weren't and the thread got locked because it got heated of course.

We work in an industry that is very busy certain times of the year, so it requires us to be staffed properly, but it also creates an over staffing at other times. This is why these things are good and why you shouldn't have to suffer at other times from under staffing.

COLA's, LOA's, low hour lines, whatever, it's not a big deal, it's actually a good thing in my eyes. I really wished I could've gotten one at XJT but I wasn't senior enough.

Any one who regional hops to chase a line, upgrade, base or what have you (unless you're leaving an obviously failing airline ((MESA)) ) is a cotton headed ninny muggins.

Calm down Jet Jock, we're messin' with ya! So fruit punch is your favorite huh? That is good stuff! Hey man, we need to have a sense of humor here...especially in these times. That's awesome that your dad flew for Braniff. If things were my way, they would still be around. Those were the real glory days of flying.

So what determines if you get the time off with pay or without? Do you just get to tell them which you'd like. I can't imagine anyone electing NOT to receive a paycheck when the option to have time off AND get paid is there.

ksrasg 05-04-2008 09:22 AM

paid prob means u have to use vac. or user time.

seanthornton 05-04-2008 01:05 PM

yep, I don't want to use up all of my vacation time....

ghilis101 05-04-2008 01:07 PM

what happens to your medical/dental if you take 30+ days of leave without pay? I heard in the past you had to pay the full amount out of pocket to keep those benefits, something like $500 (people who timed out in November and couldnt fly in Dec)

ExperimentalAB 05-04-2008 01:46 PM

The time off w/o pay is with benefits...
