I assume you are going to be DH'd on either end of the TDY? When you check in, tell the gate agent you are on a DH and would like to go down early to stow your stuff. USUALLY, they will not have a problem with it. Seriously, like some of the other guys have said, look into the FedEx option. The 3 or 4 times I went to training events and knew I was going to be gone a while, I just FedEx'd a box to the hotel. Called the hotel, told them I'll be there a month and there will be a box arriving and to hold it for me. Works great and it's less crap you have to carry around with you.

The agent will 9 times out of 10 say something about 3. Make it into 2 and you may be ok. They typically require 1 carry on and 1 personal item. If the flight is empty you may be able to get away with it but don't chance it.
