Zed Pass and first class

anyone ever been able to ride up in Biz or first on a Zed? im trying to get from the EU this weekend. DL, US, and CO are in the negative. Im planing on buying a zed on AF but looks like the back is a little full and front wide open. will they deny me boarding even with open seats in the front?
Thanks

I've seen people stay behind with first/business seats still open.

Thats crazy. You would think they would at least upgrade one of their coach passengers to get someone on.

I just used ZED fare tickets to go to Japan. I didn't know there were different classes, but SWA only had ZED Economy on NWA.

First class was completely empty, and economy was nearly full, but they wouldn't upgrade my wife and me. I asked if we could pay extra at the NWA counter at the airport, but they said if our pass department only had ZED economy then I can only sit in economy.

I had LH in TXL upgrade me on a ZED fare a while ago the gate agent said she wasn't supposed to but was being nice, its all up to the gate agents and how good they are working the computers. I would not plan on it, this might sound a little out there, but have you tried connecting in SXM, its off season and the AF flights might not be full, then if you get stuck you can just party.:) I'm sure you know about www.passrider.com in case there were connections you didn't consider.

I have found UAL to be really good about offline upgrades.

Generally, most ZEDs are supposed to be coach-only. The gate-agent might hook you up if he reservation system allows it (I think DAL's system will not allow it).

The trick is getting you on board...if the coach cabin's full the gate agent might simply not be able to do it...she can't put you in coach (it's full) and the computer may not let her put you in a higher class. Can't really fudge those numbers, especially international.

If she can legally board you in coach, a friendly gate might unofficially upgrade you by simply telling the cabin crew to sit you in first. If that's a no-go and first is obviously empty I'd probably hit up the FA after boarding...it's worked for me.

Also, company policy is more likely to let a jumpseater sit in first as opposed to a ZED, if js-ing is an option.

I purchased a ZED pass on KLM from Amsterdam to Toulouse and they put me in first class. NWA put me in world business class from Amsterdam to MSP eventhough I had only listed for a coach non-rev. (they were KLM agents again though.) I was in uniform on both instances. My mom just flew to Guatemala from LAX on Delta using a ZED and rode in first class both ways. Most of the time it comes down to the agent, whether or not they want to be cool.
