First year FO Pay ?

In determing what I would make as a first year FO, is it safe to assume the following:

1. Pay per hour times the monthly guarantee
2. 300 hrs per diem (overnight untaxed, non-overnight taxed)

Is there any other income?

WIPilot 07-06-2008 11:16 AM

In my first year so far I've averaged 161 per diem hours per month here at mesaba since I completed training. Highest month was 312, lowest was 57.

It all depends on how badly the airline you are going to needs pilots, how much you will be used on reserve and how quickly you will be able to get a line as far as per diem goes.

hope that helps!

coldpilot 07-06-2008 11:18 AM

I wouldn't count on getting per diem. As a new hire you will sit reserve a lot which you won't get per diem for. Make sure you can live of min guarantee, in today's environment it's all you will get for awhile if you get a job that is. Tough times right now.

Expect anywhere between 1500/mo to 1800/mo. I usually average 1500-1600 dollars a month take home pay. Yes... that is less than 20K/yr... pathetic...

Rnav 07-06-2008 12:16 PM

yeah what Diver Driver said... And thats on a good month for me too to make that much. Imagine, flying 50 people around in a jet for that much??? At least I get to fly a ERJ145 for that pay <sarcasm>...

Blueskies21 07-06-2008 12:36 PM

count on guarentee, anything else is gravy. Per diem in my company lags about a month from when you earned it so it's definately disassociated for me. First year will be reserve and training, depends alot on how training is paid..and that varies alot.

BoilerUP 07-06-2008 01:39 PM

I grossed $25,000 my first year at Air Wisconsin, including Per-Diem. I spent 3 of those months in training, 2 months on reserve, and 7 as a lineholder...although I commuted 4 of those 7 as a lineholder and dropped a LOT of flying to get commutable trips.

Can someone please explain to me what a 'line' is? I have been on reserve for a year and have never heard of such a thing....

Canjet735 07-06-2008 02:19 PM

You can expect no more than 21,000 a year, first year F/O. My brother is an F/O with American Eagle: Saab 340.

My classmates and I may have ya beat, the possible Comair furloughs are possibly being issued Sept 1st, right about the time we're all due to finish sim. With any luck we might be able to complete IOE before furlough.

Yuck. My girlfriend is over there. How deep are they thinking furloughs are going at Comair? She hasn't mentioned anything to me, but then again I don't think she spends much time worrying about it.

8 years of Reserve. You must bid reserve or dont know how to bid but 8 years oh well to each his own

Salukipilot4590 07-06-2008 06:04 PM

We get paid? Why am I on the streetcorners on Saturday nights then? Who do you all work for?

Noseeums 07-06-2008 06:50 PM

At 9E i had been TDYing and sport bidding getting $1000/month in per diem. If you are not living in-base it's the way to go. It doesn't always work out, but it boosted my first-year by several thousand. Whatever the case may be, just plan on being broke as h*ll. Several thousand more than welfare level pay is still poverty. Good per diem or not, you're going to starve.

I thought you flew at Comair? So, you should know there are quite a few people here that have been on reserve forever.

JoePilot85 07-06-2008 07:14 PM

1st year at AE grossed 32K, including about 300 hours of per diem a month and crediting 85-95 hrs a month. 2nd year i'm on pace for 45K.

Try IOE, 1 trip, and 2 weeks reserve before my current Furlough at PSA... "Welcome to the Airlines"

First year pay is a sickeningly low amount of money. Don't even try to look at it optimistically.

What you can do is plan ahead, come into it with some sort of savings, and most importantly, try to get as many days off as possible so you can work at a real job.

gsphuntr 07-06-2008 07:39 PM

Plasma, Blood, Marrow, Sperm and eggs are always in need...

Comair had their crew forecasting people come into our class a few weeks ago and stated that with DAL's cutback and loss in the legal battles with Pinnacle and Freedom, that they are looking at about 160 possible furloughs. They are looking at "options" to avoid involuntary furloughs; COLA's, Voluntary furloughs, buy-outs for senior CAs. Who knows nothing I can do about that, all I have to worry about is getting through initial.

TonyWilliams 07-06-2008 09:27 PM

$16,094.95 first year. Adjusted for a whole year, about $18k.

HercDriver130 07-07-2008 04:27 AM

I was on track ...with per diem to gross around 25-26K at S5.

Washout 07-07-2008 08:34 AM

First Year 23.5k
Adjusted first 35.1 K

Second Year on pace for about 47-49ish

I'll probably be on reserve back in Houston though.

This is what perplexes me about the airlines.....

Do other industries go on a massive hiring spree....then turn around and lay off like this??

Josher9er 07-07-2008 03:08 PM

I worked alot my first year at eagle (avg about 100 hours a month) and was able to make just over 33k. Got a little more seniority and was able to make 49,500 second year. This was all including perdiem and flying as much OT as possible, but it can be done. Learn the contract.
