EMB120 - No water, food or electronics in Seatback during TO & Landing?

I've been riding SkyWest EMB120 for many years, but today is the first time the FA announced during her brief that water bottles, food or any electronics are no longer allowed in the seatback pocket during take-off and landing per the FAA. The FA had people taking stuff out of the backseat pocket and hold it until we were in the air.

Why?

Thanks

She might just be trying to keep junk out of the seat pockets because people inevitably leave it there and SHE has to clean it out. I doubt it's a FAA issue.

This is per the FAA. I asked one of our FA trainers about it, and she said it was true. It's bull if you ask me. Stupid FAA.

fjetter 07-21-2008 06:17 PM

I know this is probably a stupid question, but in the FAA's infinite wisdom did they have any reasoning behind it? This is the first I've ever heard of anything like this. It wouldn't be the first time the FAA has made a completely bonehead regulation.

I guess from what I hear from the FAs that I fly with in the Brasilia is that the FAA looks at the seat back as not an approved storage place.

ChickenFlight 07-21-2008 06:22 PM

Its because the seatback pockets are attached with velcro which means that according to the FAA it is not secure enough to bear "cargo." Sounds like complete BS to me but Eagle FAs are harping on it too since the FAA is starting to enforce the rule (since they have so much free time). Its all a load of crap but according to our FA managers, thats the reasoning.

Not just the 120, its all our aircraft....complete nonsense if you ask me...Someone is just looking to make a name for himself...

So is my underwear! Should I be concerned?

We (yes I) have had FAA observers ride on along to insure that the FA's are making sure water bottles, food and electronics are not in the seat back pockets as well as under seat carry-on's are properly stowed.

Tax dollars at work guys.

It would seem that's an overzealous interpretation of 121.577.

Glad to see that ops inspectors are looking at what's important.

Glad to see the TSA isn't the only government agency too busy looking for water bottles to actually look for the important things.

Ya, the best that I’ve personally seen, is that a TSA or security agent has to come out and inspect our fueler in RDD. I've actually seen a fueler get in trouble for having an Arrowhead water bottle in the truck. I don't know about you guys but I'm not worry about a 20 oz water bottle when the guys driving around thousands of gallons of jet fuel?

If anything happens…………………….he’s going to need all the water he can get.

Upgrade. How is the ride to ATL from FAT?

Not bad at all, just long. My seniority on the EMB allows for me to hold decent paying 4 day trips that are almost completely commutable from ATL seeing they begin and end with deadheads (makes it a 1 leg commute seeing I only have to go to LAX or SFO) plus I gain 3 hours moving east to west as well as all the red eyes from LAX/SFO/LAS/PHX/SLC & DEN coming home. I get off tomorrow in SFO at 9 am and will catch the 11:10 am UAL FLT back home. For August I got 15 days off with 91 hours of pay and 4 completely commutable 4 day trips....................SWEET!!!!

I also have to say "Thank You" to all the airTran crews, they have been absolutely unbelievable and if it wasn’t specifically for them my commute would be much harder.

BTW, how’s the pic? My sim partner (Kimball H) didn’t get the memo about being in complete uniform so he showed up in cords and his pilot shirt. They used my black leather jacket to cover his khaki cords in order to make them look like black pants. He also grew out this corny mustache (specifically for this photo) and wore a black tie with a knot the size of Texas (IT’S HUGE!!!). His personal photo on Skywestonline is a real trip (kind of like a 70's disco look)! LOL! It’s classic.

Midwest Express doesn't allow items in seatback pockets other airlines don't mention it that I js on.

The F/As at Republic have been harping on the seat back stowage since we got our certificate. I guess the FAA was crazy about it three years ago, but it has taken this long to filter through the system and into established training programs. Personally, I love watching business guys stick their laptop in the seatback pocket, only to have the pocket fall apart and their laptop go crunch! Is it really that hard to put your laptop back in its case?

mooney 07-22-2008 07:46 AM

Pinnacle CRJ's have been like that for a while now, it was an FAA thing. But I havent heard the FA's harping on it as much recently...
