Furloughed...Now what

Looks like I'll be furloughed in September. That gives me a month to figure something out.

Just wondering, what everyone else plans on doing that are being furloughed.

I won't personally be furloughed, but some of the guys I know that will be are either getting out or will be going to work in something completely different.

Guys that are married with kids that have college degrees seem to be getting out altogether. The younger guys with just student loans seem to be going to work for anyone as they will make just as much or more than first year pay...none that I've talk to are looking at flying gigs....there just isn't any!

I haven't done much. I moved back with my parents and have been going to the beach everyday. Not a bad life except that I miss the free travel. Got in touch with my buddies from flight school and the airprot where I learned to fly. There still are CFI jobs available. I'm still living off of my last paychecks and went to the unemployment office and hopefully I'll get some cash out of that. My local FEdex location is mass hiring hard laborers later this month and I'm thinking about giving it a try. Most of the guys that were furloughed aren't doing much as far as flying with the exception of some that wanted to go back to cfiing, haven't kept in touch.

I know of some friends that are also finding temporary jobs in the mean time before being called back...they don't feel like going to another regional.

Like Bond said.. guys can probably find a job that pays the same as their current job-good quality of living. Plus they are now home every night.

A buddy of mine is being furloughed in sept and he is going back to school to kill some time... another possible option... good luck

I am not furloughed, but I am taking 20 days off a month, and I am going to subsitute teach on my days off.

Our school system is way understaffed, they said I will work every day I have free, and 65 a day, not great, but not commuting to work either.

Not great, not bad

Just an option

For those of you guys that speak spanish COPA Airlines is hiring. Not great pay, not great work rules but you'll get your 737NG time while things turn around here in the US.
As reevesofskyking said............just an option.......

Bartending is always an option (especially as the economy dives into a recession). Alcohol sells always skyrocket. Or buy a liquor store. Whatever.

I've been out for about three weeks, I'm going to give it till third week in August then I'm giving up on aviation jobs and I'll take anything that replaces my income...pizza delivery if I have to.... in my case unemployment has been slow in coming because the university I used to work at screwed it up without me knowing...

Just an idea

Can you still non-rev? Don't know your financial situation, but this may be a rare opportunity to travel around Europe for a month or so. Get a second-class Eurailpass and stay in hostels/B&Bs and it's surprisingly cheap, especially after the summer tourist season. Once you start working again, your next chance to do something like this may be when you retire. Good luck! :)
