Asa Loft

Many of the pilots hired in the surge late last year and early this year will be doing their first recurrent training events soon (myself included). Can anyone share any light on what to expcect/study for etc.?

Thanks in advance,

RJ

Simple flight out of ATL where the IP will make up a bs scenario that will be impossible to solve and you need to make that possible. ENJOY !

Sounds likes fun thanks!

Mine was a non event. We were going to somewhere in Florida, had a hydraulic system overtemp, dealt with it, landed, then they had me do a zero flap landing and that was it.

I thought this thread was titled "Ass Loft" at first..........

Any of you guys have any funny stories from loft's/pc's etc?

you don't technically have to study for a loft since there's no oral and it's not pass/ fail. But you should always be ready for a PC since it could change to that due to Capt needing one, or other scheduling snafus. Good CRM and communication works well in trouble-shooting. I recommend the FO fly while the Capt runs QRH and communicates/ manages. Don't dig a deeper hole for yourself by making the initial problem worse.

You'll usually end up having fun and learning some stuff

Much appreciated, thanks

I got into a fight with the IP cause he kept contradiciting himself and i called him on it. Then he went as far as to say, ' listen, son, if you want me to treat you like a first year probation guy- I WILL ' ... To which i responded...and how are you treating me now ?

(We actually got along GREAT after that ! )

On the note of prepping for a PC I was worried about that for my LOFT last year and asked about whether it would be a PC or not the IP said we dont do that anymore since a PC is a 2 day event and they dont pull surprises on you anymore.

Thats what I was told anyway but most definitely study up so you dont look unprepared.

I don't know about the "no fail" LOFT scenario..... I guess, technically, it is not a PC, but that don't mean you are good to go no matter what you do.

I was talking to a friend who was giving a LOFT to these bozos and this crew briefed and set the wrong DA and commenced the approach even through they didn't have the required visibility. Once they reached DA, (magically) no runway was available, but they didn't even try to go missed. They ended up flying way below DA without starting a missed approach and actually flew into the ground. Pretty bad.

These guys didn't "fail" a PC because they weren't taking a PC. They also didn't get to finish that day-had a little clean-up work to do on a couple of issues......

-On the jet, a loft can't turn into a pc anymore cause of the 2 days you need. But it can turn into recurrent flight training which is like a pc without the jeopardy. That happened to me.

-Loft's aren't pass/fail, but I've heard of crews who didn't complete them and had to come back.

-Failed fms's seem to be a popular one lately. Green needles and review how to compute descent rates, etc.

Granted I am on the ATR but my LOFT consisted of a loss of oil pressure and then subsequent engine failure. The CA and I decided to land at the nearest airport and did so. The LOFT was done in like 60 mins, our IP was awesome!
