Lakes hiring 121 guys
I was told that so many furloughed 121 guys are showing up at the door that Lakes is no longer looking at low time pilots to fill the ranks. This is a big mistake IMHO, because as soon as the majors start hiring again, or they find a better paying job these guys are going to jump. Lakes is going to loose a lot of money in training cost.

All there was were furloughed, or soon to be, 121 guys at their last interview--except me of course! Wonder why they even wanted me to show up! Oh, and NONE of those pilots were too happy about their training contract. $7,500 to pay back, plus 9.5% APR if they fire you, you fail a checkride, or you leave withing 15 months. Looked pretty legal and legit. I was always told NEVER to sign a training contract by some of my ex-airline pilot friends, if at all possible. Gotta do what you gotta do sometimes, though.

Keep in mind though that not only are you staying current but you are eligible for upgrade after 300 hours online. A few months on the FO payscale and you are building PIC. I understand its a tough jump for some but not that far fetched. And at least you still get to fly FWIW.

Judging by their pay scale - they know they are just a PIC builder stepping stone for other things...an 11 year CA gets $48. Not much of a reason to be there for 11 years! Heck, I'd almost do it for the PIC time and being based closer to home. You better have some money saved up or secondary income though...because its $1200 a month without per diem. That said, its still better to stay current and keep flying and not be unemployed, but at what cost? Unemployment pay is higher than that!
