Regional carrier jet runs off San Antonio runway

Just saw a NWA 747 land on it a couple days ago. I'd say it's plenty long!

Since we are going with blind speculation...
My guess is that after touchdown a pack of chupacabras ran out onto the runway. The FO, knowing how rare and special these creatures are, decided the ecologically sound thing was to sacrifice the plane and passengers safety to protect them.

If on a short runway like the one that is left open at SAT...with normal braking on the CRJ-200 the pnuematic reversers barely have time to open by the time you hit 80 knots anyways. They have to be the slowest opening reversers on any plane out there.
edit: last time I was there (a month or so ago?) it was a pretty short runway that was still open... 8500 certainly isn't very short. Blame a mechanical issue or a roving group of mexican immigrants in that case.
