Job Switch?

Input is appreciated. Positive or negative.

I'm currently a low guy at regional. Finished training a little while ago, and am sitting on reserve.

Just got an offer from a company to fly a Beechjet. Having only been at the airline for a short time, I'm not exactly sure about the ramifications of taking this. Seems like a good gig, but thought I might throw it out there for input.

You need to provide more info..... basically, more details about how's your regional doing and more about that beechjet job...... there are corporate jobs, and there are corporate jobs...

If it were me and the Beech job was local I would take it in an instant. Of course I'm about to get furloughed so maybe my decision would be a bit easier hah but still I've pretty much had it with my company. And yeah more details would help too with your situation

Depends on your goals. If you are looking for a major down the road, stay with the regional for a year. If you want corporate, then the Beechjet is the way to go.

Some questions...
Is your long term goal to fly part 121?
Are you low time? (under ATP mins)
How often are you flying at your current regional?
What do upgrade prospects look like at your airline?
What is the schedule like for the beechjet operator?
Is it a 2 pilot crew and if so how long has the PIC been there?
Will you be PIC typed in the plane?

The reason I ask these is because I had a chance at a Hawker gig when I had 900 hours but I turned it down. I turned it down because in part 91 you have NO IDEA if and when you may ever upgrade and since there are "no" rules you may not even fly, you may just fill the seat and watch the PIC do whatever it is she does. How often will you fly? If it is less than 500 hours per year and you get dumped in a year are you any closer to your goal then before? If you are PIC typed and its part 91 you can be PIC on some legs if the company/insurance allows which would be a good thing. Some of these places that are part 91 with long time captains just need a seat filler and the captain may not move on until he has a heart attack in the left seat.

The part 121 goal is because in the long term it would probably look better if you were in a multi crew part 121 environment and upgraded in that environment. Certainly not the rule because majors hire from everywhere but the road may be shorter if you stuck 121.

Flying the Beech Jet= better QOL, better pay, and probably better benefits, but right now, you don't need QOL, pay or benefits, you need TURBINE TIME. Flying the beech jet, 300-400 hrs a year if you're lucky, at the reginals, 1000 hrs on a yearly basis.

I'd stay at the regional and get my time. Regionals suck, but they get you where you want to go (most of the time)

Pay and Quality of life are the main things I would consider.

Do you commute? Commuting is not fun.

I'm sure the pay is a lot better flying the Beech. How long til upgrade?

Hard decision, you gotta way all your options and look into the future, then make a educated decision.

Good luck. I'm off to get EIGHT-BALLED. See ya

Huh? Since when has that been the norm for reserves?

They arent......very light citations I and II can be.....but thats about it.

On the plus side....its the same exact avionics as the CRJ...so youll have no problem with the transition....it will climb much better too.

Bottom line.....if its an increase in your QOL......then go for it. Just do your HW on the company first. Promising the stars and closing up shop a few months later can be a real bummer

Good Luck

It's impossible to compare a corporate job without more details...

Corporate jobs run the gamut from 6-figure lifetime employment on a G-something down to 24/7 booze-free pager duty, routine FAR and safety violations, jerk boss, etc, etc.

Also I have concerns when I see a junior pilot (cfi or regional FO) get a "sweet deal" corporate offer...if it's such a sweet deal where are all the experienced, typed corporate pilots? Either the pay is too low for them or the working conditions are poor.

Of course you might have lucked into a good opportunity, but do your homework.

Palin doesn't like Beech jets. If she becomes VP you can expect her to have all of them sent to Arizona to collect sand.

soon2bfo 09-13-2008 08:51 AM

See if you can do some unpaid leave and try it out. It might be a little underhanded to try out the Beechjet job while keeping the airline in your back pocket, but corporate flight department are famous for pulling the rug on pilots. I knew one who had flown for an individual for 20 years and then he got dropped without warning at 50 years old because a local 135 offered to staff the plane in return for the use of the plane, plus income. It was in the fall before Christmas too.
