Colgan bases

How long would it take to hold IAH or IAD as a base for a new hire? Im not sure if there are any other non-outstation bases for the Saab, but Im just looking for a 1 leg commute to Florida. Thanks.

It depends where they need people. I could say 1 week or 5 months but the truth is you will go where they need you. There is no set amount of pilots they always need at each base, it changes monthly with scheduling need.

People on here will give you a range of guesses but remember none of them work in Manassas and decide where people go.

This is purely speculation, but I think at this point in time, IAD would be much quicker to hold than IAH. Maybe even right out of training... but like OJ said, it's basically wherever they need you at the time you finish training. IAD is one of our most junior bases (the lines suck.. a lot.) Where do you live in Florida? I know MCO would be an easy one leg commute out of IAD... but if you live in a non-hub town in FL, one of the other more "southern" bases might work too.. for example, CHO, which would allow you to connect to FL via CLT or ATL.

I am coming out of JAX, so IAD would work for a one leg commute. Are IAD and IAH the only hub bases for the Saab?

Laxrox43 09-23-2008 07:38 AM

Just to help you out, sometimes its easier to do it two-legs (worse case sinareo for you). A lot of flights that are direct, are usually at capacity (especially now that they are putting RJ's on those routes). If you could request CHO as a base, you would be set. You could connect through CVG, ATL, DTW, IAD, PHL, LGA, and CLT. Lots of options.

All I am suggesting is that you be open-minded to the idea of a two-leg commute. You will make your life nuts if you aren't open to this idea.

Blue Skies...
Lax

PS. You can expect to hold IAD within a few months. Patience is golden Daniel-son.

There is also LGA, but it's pretty senior, the lines suck maybe even more so than IAD, and I haven't looked up passrider, but I'm thinking commuting out of LGA would require a 2 leg if you're going to JAX.

jaxpilot 09-23-2008 09:45 AM

I laughed because I figured you had never done 121 before because you thought you would have received a call 2 weeks out by the airline if a class had been cancelled. :D

Classes have been cancelled before on the day a new class was to begin.

I have heard nothing about a class being cancelled and I know Colgan is interviewing in LGA on the 26th

usmc-sgt 09-23-2008 04:53 PM

There was an upgrade class that was on day 1 or so and it got cancelled.

you guys still have Hyannis as a base(seasonal anyway), I always thought that would have been fun in the summer..........

Ahhhhh yes, actually ACK was GREAT!!!!
Especially for the FO on the 1900 back in the day.
We had to stand at the bottom of the stairs as the rich ladies in their skirts had to climb up, and bend ever so slightly to not hit their heads!!:D

P.S. Lax, I bowed out of class. Came home yesterday. Too much going on at home for me to be away for 6 weeks, and for the pay. Looked like IAD was going to be the base for most...?

Laxrox43 09-25-2008 08:46 PM

Short Bus...sorry to hear that, but family time is more important! I wish you well. Good luck with the kiddo's!

I happened to be in that class ... good times right there ... I think steam might have actually been coming out of my ears on that one ... :)

But in answer to your question Jax, IAH and IAD are both hub bases, yes. From what I have heard, LGA is dwindling down quickly ... but that's just the rumor on the street down here in IAH. I've been down here since July of '07, and I will tell you, it is VERY senior. If you want to come to IAH, I'd expect to be getting the scraps and pieces of schedules from what the line holders can't fly for a while. BUUUUT, on the upside, you'll love everyone in IAH, we have a bunch of great guys/gals down here (with maybe one or two exceptions).

I just handed in my bid sheet with IAH and TYR as one and two.... the mood for most of the guys in class is one of trying to preserve QOL.... not necessarily just looking for high time lines.... which I found pretty interesting.
Lot of hopeful commuters in this new hire class..... crossing my fingers.

Right now it might turn out in your favor unless someone senior to you in the system wants down here. We just had 4 FOs leave IAH in the last month, so that creates some openings down here ... plus we have 3 of us leaving for upgrade before the end of Oct, so odds are some of you in class will be able to come down to the great land of Texas! It's a blast down here, you'll love it. Best of luck to ya!
