Skywest Hiring? Got a weird automated e-mail.
"Thank you for your interest in a First Officer position with SkyWest Airlines. We have reviewed your application and need some additional information. Please contact xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, our Pilot Interview Coordinator. Please inform her of your Instrument time break down, i.e. how many hours of actual, simulated and simulator. Note: only 20 hours of simulator instrument time will be accepted towards the 100 total hours requirement. Once your information is complete your application will be submitted for review.
We look forward to hearing from you soon." Edited of course... I sent my application in a few months back |
I figured it was about time for another rumor that "something big" is coming. The other day I heard from my crashpad mate's friend's friend who knows somebody in the training department who's chummy with the brass that "something is coming in January."
Anyhow, I doubt it means anything. The HR department was probably bored one day and decided to start cleaning up some incomplete applications. I suspect it will take a crap load of additional flying to put Skywest in hiring mode anytime soon. |
Actually I flew with somebody from the training department yesterday and he said that they are in fact planning to run a class, partly (like .01%) to build up the pilot group for some anticipated opportunities, but mostly because the training department all need to do their re-certification. I wouldn't want to be in that class, there will be a guaranteed fed in the seat almost every ride.

Is ASA going to be hiring too?

FAA = Failed Airline pilot Association

Maybe someone in HR pushed the wrong button and it sent you that e-mail? I know that SkyWest has continued to advertise they were hiring on some of the pilot job websites and are accepting applications, but, no new information has been provided to the pool of about 200. It might be a sign they are updating and getting ready to make some movement in their training department but I doubt interviews will be happening anytime soon. I don't know the exact number but their pool is large, somewhere around 200+.
My guess is they will run a class next year in the spring to get the Brasilia reserve built up. Rumor is that it is low but the CRJ reserve is overstaffed. They will either have to train new pilots in the Brasilia or force CRJ pilots to go to the Brasilia. |

Haha, troublemaker. |
I snooped around Jerry's desk and saw the contract....they are signed!
|
Considering how overstaffed the jet is and how many guys and gals are swimming right now, I don't think any hiring is likely. Stanger things have happened though.

The numbers for pilot overstaffing I've heard have ranged from 200-400. We also typically have nearly a dozen RJs sitting on the ramp unused every day in SLC.
There won't be a newhire class for a long time. |
If there are 118 in the pool and SkyWest trains 20 a month, you can guess that there won't be any hiring for at least 8 months after they start their training again. Granted, not everyone in the pool will have remained unemployed and may have moved on to a different job. So the soonest a new hire would see the training facility at SkyWest would be the end of December if they start things up in January.
Don't hold your breath, you might turn blue. These are all ifs and pure speculation in a very unstable economy. The only good thing happening for the airlines is a barrel of oil has stayed under $70 for a few weeks now. Hopefully, some of the big ones do some hedging at the bottom and learn from July of 08. I also think we will see a few companies go under in the next year. It will suck for those pilots that will lose their jobs but it may also strengthen others. I am not hoping for this, just pure speculation. |
I would tend to agree that there probably won't be any hiring for quite some time. I know our reserve coverage is over the number that they want, which is great if you want time off, I've been granted every request I've submitted, and couldn't come too soon for the holidays! Then again who really knows, probably soon they will be building 95+ hour schedules for us again begging everyone to pick up JR man stuff, and we'll be longing for the days of overstaffed'ness again.

I asked a few months back what number I was in the Brasilia pool...There are 53 total in the EMB pool...not sure about the RJ. The latest email update a few weeks ago mentioned a recruitment summit, and that they hoped to have better news for us in the coming months.
|
Did you ask before or after July? Keep in mind that two Brasilia classes were cancelled and 40 pilots were dumped back in the pool. I think they also cancelled a RJ class too.
|
I asked in the beginning of September so I would be led to believe the number is accurate.
|
I was scheduled for the Aug. 4 class...
|
I was in the July 7th Brasilia class that was cancelled on July 3rd. I think I am #15.

"Your online application for our First Officer Pilot position has been received and is in the process of being reviewed. Once a decision has been made, one of our Pilot Interview Coordinators will be in touch with you.
Thank you for your interest." That is their reply It seems from that reply that it can go two ways... No thanks, or here's an interview date... It doesn't make sense for them to send me an actual written e-mail to just tell me their not hiring... I could be wrong. |

I was in the July 7 class, also. Mine wasn't canceled though, but it was the last class at SkW. |
