PDT DHC-8-300 Emergency Landing in PHL this Morning
It looks like flight 4551 landed nose gear up. No injuries reported thankfully.
Emergency landing at Philadelphia International; no injuries | Philadelphia Inquirer | 11/16/2008 Not a bad news article, but no details yet. That's the only article I've found. If anyone else finds something with some more information, feel free to add it on. |
thats why there are 2:55 min delays going into philly today
|
And PHL sucks even on a good day...
|
I just heard it was a 300 (HDF).

Capt. is a good friend of mine. I was his private/inst instructor. He called me this morning after it happened. Nose gear would not come down and alt. extension also failed. Foamed runway, uneventful landing.
The thanks he gets is he has to blow in the tube and pi$$ in a bottle.....still going through all that hassle 3 hrs after incident. |
Now they will say "no single-engine taxi on the 300s". Mark my words.

http://archive-server.liveatc.net/kp...2008-1400Z.mp3 I think that is the archive for the tower when it all went down. |

I know the Capt and FO well also. They're both very good pilots. I'm sure the paperwork and junk will take way longer than it should, but I'm just glad everyone's safe. Hope they can repair the airframe....I love flying the -300s.
And I'd say you'll be right about single engine taxiing the 300s, and they'll probably hit the -100s too. I heard they're spending a lot of money changing nose tires that are worn unevenly, since they have to be changed as a pair now. |

I have to ask has anyone else been getting nosewheel shimmies that have been worse then normal for the dash since we started single engine taxing. I've heard from some ALG mechanics it's the tires but this is second time this fall we've had a nosewheel failure in a 100 at the end of september.

I haven't heard anything about another nosewheel failure. Where'd that happen? I assume they were able to alternate extend? I have noticed nosewheel shimmies, and the FIL about locked wheel turns had a crazy picture of a bad nosewheel bearing. Who knows. Could have been a bad PSEU too. I've heard one possible problem might have been the nosewheel centering mechanism didn't center the nosewheel, but that's entirely a rumor, so take it for what it's wroth. It certainly does sound like a possible cause, but I wouldn't go farther than that.

I did a ferry from PHL with the gear down a few months ago, sounds like the same thing.
|
The CA I was flying with tonight was in the Mx hangar with the airplane. He told me that when they brought the gear up after takeoff in ABE the nosewheel wasn't centered properly and jammed inside the well. Apparently the only damage was to the nose gear doors and the airplane was to be ferried out to MDT tonight for repair. Good on the crew for bringing her in without any injuries.

props to the piedmont guys. great job! glad nobody was hurt.

The articles on this event are ridiculous. First of all, they keep saying "jet", which we obviously aren't, and my favorite headline so far is on the comcast home page, "Jet Crash Lands at Philly Airport." Who comes up with these headlines? And I agree, single engine taxiing may be going away... Anyways, good job guys (and girl)!
